I just recently looked at a motor i'm thinking about buying, and the guy isn't sure what it is. It came from a 80 something F150, it's gotta be a older motor, the casting number on the heads is D0AE-J if i remember right. It's got 8 bolt valve cover but i'm still not sure. I'll try to get the other numbers soon. Where should i look for the casting numbers on the block? I looked near the starter but i couldn't see it. This has got to be a cleveland or is it a modified? Help me if you can.
Thanks, 79redranger
D0AE-J is a 351C 2V head, which really doesn't mean much, since the Cleveland heads bolt right on to any 351M or 400. 351Cs never came in a truck, so if it is in there, somebody put it there. It's more likely that somebody bolted a set of 351C heads to a 351M, though.
There's a quick way to check. Remove the thermostat housing. If there is a removable plate under the thermostat, it's a 351C. If there is not, it's a 351M or a 400.
There is practically no way to tell by looking, since the blocks all look identical. A really trained eye might be able to spot the small difference in deck height between the 351C and 351M/400. As far as between the 351M and 400, the only way to tell the difference between them is to measure the stroke, or to drop the oil pan and look at the crank casting number.
The casting numbers should be down there somewhere, maybe on the opposite side of the starter. There are other casting markings behind the intake manifold where the oil pressure switch is mounted. The cleveland 2v heads are essentially the same as the stock 400 heads, both are open chamber with the same size ports. Its possible the 400 heads had thermactor provisions. These can be taken down in porting.
Well, I ended up buying the motor. $150. I also got a timing set and lifters, all new, with it. The motor will need a little work. Cleaning up and definitely rebuilding. I've got a couple questions:
Does the difference in years matter? Mine is a 79, and i believe the motor is a 70.
I'm sure the cleveland won't bolt to a c6, so what do i need to find for a transmission?
Will headers i am currently running on my 351M bolt to the cleveland heads if i swap?
I found the block casting numbers. D0AE-J. A friend of mine was giving me the numbers and i got em mixed up. It a cleveland then.

1970 would make sense to be a cleveland being the 400 did not start until 71. The type of engine mounts may be different on the 1970 car vs the 79 truck (the truck uses a tri-mount rubber and the car might have had a long cap screw acting as a pin between the engine and frame), but this could probably be adapted if need be. As for a transmission, there are c6's with "small block" bellhousing patterns and i believe they were in many an early 70s mustang equipped with the cleveland (mach 1's). The headers will bolt right up provided the cleveland heads are 2v, and we've established that. Sounds cool.
