how to track down the serial numbers?

That'll be tough. The only block ID is the casting number and it could have been in any platform made by FoMoCo that offered the CJ or SCJ as an option.
Post the block casting number (on bell housing above starter).

actually there is a number that is stamped into the back side of the block that is supposed to be the serial number of the car. it is ...... 1Z506085 and is a DOVE-A block. thanks.

DOVE-A is an excellent block, came with beefier mains/side rails, machined for 2 and 4-bolt mains, but wasn't used exclusively in the CJ or SCJ. Haven't heard about the VIN number being stamped into the block at the factory.
