I have a 1999 F-150 XLT with the 5.4L engine extended cab with 55,000 miles on it. I was wondering how many miles/years should I expect on the factory shocks and struts. What did you get and what did you replace them with?
A lot depends on your driving conditions. I've seen shocks that were dead after a couple years and others that have lasted many years. If they aren't leaking, dont feel bouncy etc they are probably still good.
Even if they are still good you might notice quite a difference if you replace them.
On my wife's Exploder the shocks were still good but I wanted to improve the handling and ride quality. I installed Monroe Reflexes and was impressed. It made it handle better and feels less top heavy than the with the original shocks.
I got a similar truck (99 4.6) about a year ago at 60K, the fronts were completly gone, there was no rebound at all. rears were only slightly better. I relaced them with heavy duty monroes immediatly and noticed a small improvement. This last week (20K later) I installed Bilsteins after hearing such great things about them. (once broken in- 100 miles or so). These things are amazing, no more brake dive, no sway around corners (under sane circumstances) and now that they have broken in I belive the ride on small bumps has IMPROVED. Went to see my dad last night, who I got the truck from, and had him drive it. He was actually upset that they switched to a 2003 Sequia(sp?) afterwards. He had me order them for his 94 E-150 conversion van this morning. They cost twice as much, but they're ten times better in my opinion.
