Shocks on 2000 Ranger

This may be a stupid question but how do you replace the shocks in a 2000 Ranger? The shocks are inside the spring and I can't grab hold to the shock to loosen the top nut, so the shock turns with it. What do other people do to turn the top nut? I know on 97 and earlier models the shock is mounted next to the spring and you can grab hold to the shock and loosen the top nut. Why did they change it?

Should be a flat on the threaded rod that the bolt goes on, put a wrench on that to stop it from turning.

I just changed the shocks on my 2000 ranger also and the top of the shock is squared off right above the threads. I suppose you could use a small wrench but I just used a pair of vicegrips. Also I wasn't to smart and tried to do with the hood open and leaning down into the engine compartment before I realized I could just remove the dirt guide thing in the wheel well and it was so much easier.
