Visit my galleries and the Tools one has photos of the test stand I built. I designed it to allow engines other than my FE's to be put on it without completely rebuilding it.
Just build two motor mount brackets to fit a new engine and use the rest of the existing stand.
You could but you need a radiator, guages, and place to motor a starter and ignition switch, and whatever els you consider to be necessary (I have a place for a battery and small gas can but often just have the gas hose slipped into the gas can).
For a short run you could just route the two radiator hoses together but it doesn't leave much reserve heat capacity if you want to run longer to address some problem.
I've seen engines started on the ground just resting on a pile of wooden blocks but that didn't impress me much.
I use my engine test stand to break in high lift cams when you have to change the valve springs after break in and to test for oil leaks. I also use it to cure the header paint.
As far as a list goes, never really got that deep into it. Maybe someone else has.
