I saw this and wanted to know if this guy made this in a shop, or do they sell these things that start engines before you mount them back in a truck.
What are they called? I did a search under "engine starter" but no hits on google.
I think it's called a "test bed" or something like that. Hopefully the guy who built this one wears earplugs and "mickey mouse" ear protectors when he lights up that ol' flathead - the noise from those uncorked exhaust manifolds would be pretty intense unless he piped them thru mufflers!
we have a whole bunch of home made ones. we use them in school to do work on egines and then ya can run them to see what does what. we also have a final were the teacher breaks somthen on the engein and ya have 15 minutes to find the problem repair and get the engine running.
if you can try to build one. if you have a little welding skills or know someone who does, get some scrap angle iron and go to town. we used to build ours and they arent that hard at all to make. it will save you some money at least.
They have little monetary value since they are usually built for one particular engine family. Value is about 1/2 of the price of the gages and parts on them to the right person, otherwise nothing..
yep test stand are nice and they are good and loud im a mechanic in the military and we "ground hop" motors all the time witch basiclly means we pull it out set it on the ground do whatever work we need to on it and before we stuff it back in we start em to make sure everything will work right and not leak. can save lots of work and well worth the efffort, unless you like fixing bothersome errors inside of the engine compartment.
