Looking at getting a new starter

Well, with 176K miles on the original starter, i believe it is showing signs of dragging when cold. After it is warm, it spins like normal, but when parked outside in the cold, it is much slower. I just called the local Ford Dealer and asked about starters and they only show one Reman for 99 MY trucks. What is everyones recommendation as far as new starters for these rigs. Thanks

Ken

My truck was doing that last year and I asked the same question. If it comes in a shiny blue box with the letters WPS on it, do not buy it I can tell you from personal experience on the 01 model I had.

However, when I asked the question on my 2000 model, someone said go out and clean the battery cables/terminal. I had no corrosion but they insisted I do it anyway to knock off the oxidation and put it back together. It instantly fixed it and I have not replaced the starter on it yet. I felt I needed a starter for sure because I knew this starter had taken a lot of abuse when the Glow plugs were not working and a guy I work with had gotten it hot to the point of smoking a few times before I bought it.

I have been happy with the Ford gear reduction 3 bolt starter.

Go with a gear reduction starter. You and your truck will be happier.
I ran a standard starter for 7 years and replaced it a couple of months back with a gear reduction unit....There is a big difference in the way the truck starts.

If, by "standard", you mean direct-drive.....

There are no "standard" starters for Powerstroke diesels. They are all gear-reduction types.

It's just that there are two different gear-reduction types, "off-set" (OSGR), and "planetary" (PLGR).

Ken I have a started in my garage that was good when I pulled it off my truck last year. If you want to rule out the starter, I can get it to Andrew when he heads your way this weekend and you can check it out. If it works, good, if not, just send it on back with him. Just my spare right now so no worries. Let me know.
