Anybody have a .17 HMR ?

I'm considering buying a .17 HMR. Or possibly the Hornady .17 mach 2.
The (new) Mach 2 is a less likely candidate.
Anybody have experience with the .17 HMR?
I'd like an expensive gun to shoot besides a .22. Something I can monkey with to work on getting a 100 yard sub-MOA gun.
Thanks in advance.

i too was very impressed with the ballistics of the .17 HMR. however, i cant justify buying a new rifle chambered in that caliber and paying around $10 for a box of ammo when i can get a rifle chambered in .223 and have it serve the same purpose but pay less for the .223 ammo. but thats just my .02 cents, and besides when i shoot one all of what i just said will probably go right out the window.

I have a Ruger 77/17, neat rifle to shoot, (low to no recoil) just haven't had time to really test it for groups yet. Few guys around here have the HMRs and are getting awsome groups with them. I would like to get one of the new 17 Mach 2 in a Ruger MK II & then rebarrel one of my 10/22 (10/17 ?).

The 17 HMR sounds like it is a very accurate rimfire round, but I see no real purpose in it for myself. I have a .22 so I can shoot very cheaply, and the 17 would completely defeat its purpose. I agree with combatcop about a 223 being more practical. A .223 has a longer range and can also be used on deer and antelope, while the 17 HMR is not large enough. One of my friends has a 17HMR, but I have not heard much about it from him.

I have the Ruger 77/17 all weather with the laminated stock. I shoot it alot. For me its just something different from the .22lr. Ammo is more expensive but its a blast to shoot!

sometimes when buying a gun it doesn't have to be practical, just what you what.i will still use my 10/22 more but it's nice to have the 17 hmr just to play with now and then

Ruger .204, centerfire, (similar to a .223, necked down).

its a real hummer of a round..... reloadable, unlike the .17, much better ballistics, much better knockdown, prolly not cheaper to shoot...
