i've been having some steering trouble on my 78 f250. i just replaced the aftermarket steering wheel with a original ford wheel and it has alot of play in it, so im figurin the column bearings are shot, it is a tilt wheel if that matters. also the steering shaft seems bad to, it has about an 1/2-3/4'' of play in it from side to side. i adjusted the screw on the steering box but havent really noticed a difference. so my question is what exactly is the problem thats making the ride so bad. also what do you recomend as far as a new steering shaft, ive been lookin into borgeson and flaming river.
Is it 2wd or 4wd? Is the play as you turn the wheel or is it like the shaft is flopping around inside the column. If the truck is 2wd and the play is as you turn the wheel, then check the rag joint located between the column and the steering box. There should be a fiber disk in between 2 metal disks with pins in it. If the disk has worn away it creates play in the steering.
Also try having someone turn the wheel while you look for the point where the play is.
its 4x4 and the play is when you turn the wheel, and its inside the column, the shaft moves inside the housing? i guess it would be. right where the bearing is it seems alittle too loose.
I tryed a Borgeson on my 79 F250 4by4 and I took it back off and put the stock one back on. It felt spooky going down the road, like it was made out of rubber. It might have been ok with smaller tires, but not with 40's.
