Diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea a couple of years ago, used the CPAP machine up to the end of this past February. Surgery on deviated septum, UPPP, tonsillectomy and something else. Sore throat up until four days later when put into the hospital for aspiration pneumonia and unable to breathe without oxygen. Oh yes, and Mr. Vanden Bosch you have a partially collapsed lung and an abcess (fluid-filled sac) on your right lung. Out of the hospital after four days and at home resting ever since on full disability from work--may be able to go back in early May.
But to be honest with you, the surgery is probably the best thing I've ever had done--ranks right up there with my LASIK.
Thought I'd post an update. I had the sleep study done last night. A lot of wires connected to my head, and a couple on my legs and chest. It was kind of wierd but certainly not too uncomfortable. I had my typical sleep when I was woken up by the tech. I was asked to try the cpap machine and mask, which I agreed to. The first mask was NOT good...made my lips go numb and I couldn't breath very well. She came back in after a few minutes (they monitor you all the time) and fitted me with a different mask. Much better...I dropped off to sleep almost immediatly and slept for another 3 hours. I have to say I feel better now even on the 3 hours of good sleep than I typically do after 8 hours without the machine.
Hopefully I'll be getting one before too long.
Attention all the guys/gals out there: If your spouse complains about your snoring/lack of breathing or you ever wake up gasping for air --- you really should consider being tested!
My Fiance has suggested that I consider going for one of these tests. I'm guessing it might be tough to fall asleep, but I've been told that I struggle to breath and that I snore. I think I'm definitely going to go and get checked out. I don't know how I would sleep if I had to have a machine hooked up to me every night. If there is surgery available, I'd probably opt for that. Either way, it would be good to know that whatever the treatment is.. I'll probably get a better and healthier nights sleep (as well as her too!!)
Glad to hear that you and the machine are compatible DutchmanAZ. I never got any decent sleep in three visits and tried for months to use the CPAP but it wasn't going to happen. I'm sure you'll feel a lot better, in the meantime, try to sleep on your side or your stomach, that has helped me.
Hey Fatman...sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. Did you try different mask types? It's my understanding that there are around 20 different ones.
Maybe that would help.
I must admit that sleeping with a mask was a little different, but I think it will be something I can get used to. All I know is this: I certainly feel more rested today than I have in a LONG time.
Alot of time I can not get to sleep because of my back problem the pain keeps me up and then my pain pills screw me up at times. I adverage 2 good nights sleep a week.
I've had the "luck" to have back pain and sleep apnea, it does make for a miserable time. The muscle relaxants that I had to take for my back made me pretty useless and if I wanted to go to work I had to give them enough time to wear off. Thankfully my back is a lot better now and I sleep on my stomach. sglaine, I hope that your back problems are something that are not permanent. If you havn't, try a chiropractor and possibly a naturopathic doctor (acupuncture included) both helped me a lot.
I do sleep on my stomach that is the only way I can sleep and as far as the bone cruncher that is out they will not work on me. It is too severe. Thanks any ways Fatman66.
Dutch, glad your CPAP machine is working for you. I have been sleeping with one for a few years now, and it makes a HUGE differance in how rested I fell. My Dad has one as well. My mask was fine on the first try, but Dad had to try several to find one that worked well for him. It is kind of a pain in the backside to hook up when you're tired and want to go right to sleep, but I'd fight for it if someone tried to take it away from me. DF, @ his Dad's
