Just curious if anyone here has been diagnosed with apnea. I'm going in for a test next week to find out for sure. My wife tells me I stop breathing all the time in my sleep, and from what I've read, that's not a good thing.
Anyone else have this?
No, I'm not overweight...just a little too short for it.
Although I'm sure that plays a part, I can recall my wife complaining about my lack of breathing ten years ago when I was fit and trim....I'm sure being
overweight certainly exaggerates it.
I guess I won't know for sure if I have it or not until after the sleep study.
Did you do that? If so, can you describe your experience?
Thanks!

My uncle has that thing. He stops breathing in his sleep very often. Fortunaltly someone has always been there to get help when it happened. Now he has to sleep with the maching & mask to make sure he continues breathing while sleeping.
I found the night at the sleep centre to be an intrusion into my sleep pattern,as in ,
"I've got all this stuff hooked up to me, how in the world am I supposed to fall asleep now "?
I couldn't ever get to sleep at the sleep center, took three visits and they only got 3 hours of solid data. I have a CPAP machine but I can't sleep with it on, so now I just try to sleep on my side or my stomach, it helps me more than the intrusive CPAP machine.
After my sleep study, my doctor recommended for me to have my tonsils removed and my uvula shortened. I did and no more apnea or snoring. Also no more tonsilitis every winter.
I've had sleep apnea for years...that's why I'm up now. Took the sleep test, tried the CPAP for six months or so and got rid of it. My wife slept better when I was using it, but it didn't seem to help me much. When I'm laying on my side or fall asleep in my recliner, things are better. Sometimes I'll fall asleep at the computer and my head will hang down for long periods of time or even hit the keyboard. When this happens, it feels like I have whiplash. I fell asleep standing up today. I just lost 12 lbs., and that seems to have helped some. I'll try to lose more. A specialist said that I need the surgery too, but my insurance won't cover it. Its a drag...I haven't felt rested in years. Gonna go back to sleep now.
I went and took the sleep study last year, but they did not get enough information to diagnose me. I was there for 8 hours and I got 2 hours of sleep. They put sensors in your hair, on your chest, and on your fingers. If you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, they have to come in and unhook the wires from the machine, and you have to walk to the bathroom carrying all these wires. It was a real pain. I have a neighbor though that was diagnosed, and he got the CPAP and he told me it made his whole life alot better.
Had the sleep study a couple years ago. Best nights sleep in a long time. Had my deviated septum (nostrils) straightened out. Didn't help. Used a pulse-ox machine to record O2 levels. Showed not quite apneaic (sp?). Had tonsils removed. Helped a lot. Still snore a little but nothing like before. Also quit smoking so I'm sure that helped some also. Good luck and I hope all works out well in the end. Also my doctor had to code the diagnosis as chronic tonsilitis so insurance would cover the surgery because I never had a "successful" sleep study.

I got diagnosed about six years ago with severe sleep apnea. When i had the study done they told me if i stopped breathing 30 times they would wake me up and put on a cpap. It took about 3 hours and they were waking me up. I slept with the cpap on for about 4 hours and felt great. Been using it ever since. As for the surgery i was told i needed to loose wieght and have another study done, then maybe the surgery would work. The doctor told me that it wouldn't last for me and as i got older i would need the cpap again. Said my jaw was too short.
I was diagnosed 2 years ago. I have had 3 sleep studies. The doctor pre
scibed the c-pap and I had the best night's sleep I had in years. I was told if you don't take of the problem it can cause damage to your brain and your heart
from lack of oxygen. I also have to have 1.5 litres of oxygen along with the c-pap. I only need it at night. And yes, I too need to shed some weight.
I had to go and see a pulminary doctor for this problem. He also told me that if I did not learn to sleep on my side and not my back he would have my wife sew
a tennis ball in the back of my shirt. once you wear the c-pap for a week you get used to it.
