I have heard that unhooking the battery every so often will help the computer. I have a 99 f250 with a v10. its completely stock with 63000 miles on it. How long should the battery be unhooked. and what will it do thanks
I've never heard the term "helping the computer" before, but unhooking the battery is a way of resetting error codes that may have been set, throwing a CEL (Check Engine Light). There is a memory in the computer (PCM) that is always powered (even with the key off), and can be reset
by unhooking the negative battery terminal, turning on the
headlight switch, and waiting 10-15 minutes...
There are those who believe that resetting the PCM will force the system to "relearn" timing curves, etc. While this is true, it does this all the time anyway, and resetting it does nothing to help performance. The only reason you would want to reset it would be to clear an error code like Bob said. I've never seen a need to turn on the headlight switch, though.

Turning the headlight switch on just provides a current path to discharge the decoupling capacitors on the unswitched 12V, internal to the PCM. The faster these capacitors discharge, the quicker the PCM will reset.
