I am new to this forum but have been reading through it for a while and thought I would share my experience so far with this problem. I thought there was already a post regarding this error but I could not find it again.
The check engine light has been on in my 96 XLT 4.0 4x4 for a while and I just recently decided to fix it. I had AutoZone pull the code and it pointed to the # 1 O2 sensor which I replaced. Actually I could not tell which one was the number 1 sensor so I tried one and then the other, the light came back on after both. I had them pull the code again which pointed to the Evaporative Emisson Control System (see below). I replace the assembly $100.00 and the O2 Sensor was $50.00. The light has stayed out for 2 days now so we shall see.
P1443 Evaporative Emission Control System - Vacuum System - Purge Control Solenoid or Purge Control Valve fault.
Rockledge thanks for the info on the thread. The problem is not fixed the Check Engine light came back on today on my drive into work. I did clear the codes by disconnecting the battery. I guess I will make another trip to AutoZone and see what it is this time. I think the on board computers are tied into the auto parts point of sale system as well as the dealers because it seems like I have to spend about $500.00 on any repair before its fixed!
you can take the the hose off spray carb cleaner in it. take a jumper wire from the battery put it on each post of the switch. you will hear it pump. keep spraying cleaner in it till it pumps real fast. i cleaned mine about 2 mo's ago and no more light.
I had the 1443 on my 95 Ranger 3.0, and it was the purge valve. If you look at the carbon canister hoses, and follow the one with the valves back a little, there are two valves from the canister to the manifold. One is the purge valve and the other is a "thermistor". I replaced both, and the problem went away.
Those are the parts. The bigger one is the purge valve and the smaller one is the thermistor. You might check the voltages at the connectors to make sure it is not an electrical problem.
