Speedometer problems

I have a 2001 F250 w/100,000 miles. The speedo sticks at ~40mph for a while (10 miles or so) them works OK. It bounces around a little bit also. Could it be the rear speed sensor or is the problem in the speedometer itself? If it is the speedometer, how hard are they to replace? How much are they$? Can I put in a used one? Please help me this is driving me nuts.

Sounds like a speed sensor on the fritz. FWIW, its only a $20 part at stealership and takes about 10 min. to change. Might want to remove it anyway and clean off the grit and junk thats on it, this could be causing the erratic readings.

Do you have an automatic? if you do, I would think that if the speed sensor was off, your shifts would be kinda wierd. I think if it shifts normally, then if could be instrument cluster, and those I think are around $300.

It is an auto and it seems to shift fine, but most of the shifting is done below 40 mph and the speedo works fine till then. Tonight coming home it worked fine. I took it up to ~85 and cruised home at 75, no problems. This morning it bounced from 40 to 100 while I was going ~80. I hope it is just the sensor.

I doubt it is the sensor if what you say is true. The cluster is about $300 bucks and I understand that once you get the dash cover off its just a few screws and a wiring harness.

I went to my dealership today and after asking me a bunch of questions the guys in the shop told me that it is definantly my spedometer. $340 for a new cluster and they said they had to install it for me because they had to load the programing from the old speedometer into the new one. My odometer is still the analog one not the digital readout. What kind of programing can there be? Total will be well over $600 and take a few days(?) they said! The parts man said I could bring my old one in as a core and send it in to ford and they would send the new one set to my mileage within a couple of days and I could put it in. Which is it? I am not in the habit of going to the dealer(or anywhere) to get my vehicles fixed when I can do it myself and this sounds way too easy to pay someone almost $300 to fix. Please give me some opinions.

My remote door locks went bad on me and that is controled by the speedo cluster so I had it replaced after $700 worth of work, It took them a week just to figure out that it wasn't the body security module. Nearly all your optional equipment, ie powerdoor locks, cruise control, door ajar lights, auto lamp is controlled by the speedo cluster. The parts guy is correct I think, you send it to ford for proper reprogramming or the shop can do it for you if you let them remove and install. My mechanic told me that it is really easy to remove and install, its the programming that they hold you hostage on. All I can say is good luck and hope you don't get screwed by the dealer too bad.

I still think it's the speed sensor. Had a speed sensor on the wife's Taurus go bad and the speedo did just that...would stick and/or bounce around. It did fool the trans. into shifting at the wrong points and made operation a bit jerky at low speeds.

First thanks for the replys. I pulled the sensor and cleaned the crud off of it and it didn't change anything. What makes me think it's the speedo is they told me that if the speed sensor was bad 1)the ABS light would come on if the brakes had been applied while the speed was off. (Hasn't happened) 2)the trany would shift poorly.(shifts OK) 3) the odometer would not work corectly and a few other things. I checked the odometer vs. the mile markers on the road. I was going 80, the speedo said 40 and the odometer clicked of a mile at every mile marker(to the tenth) for 30 miles. Do you think it could still be the sensor? They told me not to waste my money on it.

don't waste your time on the speed sensor, every indication so far says its the cluster.
