Speedometer Problem

My 1965 speedometer bounces wildly afrer driving a few miles. I suspect te speedometer cable is at fault because the original 352 motor and transmission were replaced with a Windsor 351 and transmission (from a 1970 Torino I was told) before I bought the truck. How do I fix this - do I need a speedo cable from a 70 era Ford to fix this? Thoughts and suggestions?

Sounds like it needs lubing. There are several you can use.

I'll let another member be more exact.

Speedometer Issue

I have cleaned up and greased the speedometer cable end where it mounts into the back of the speedometer gauge, but that didn't help.

You may need to pull the cable out and lube it end to end. I still think that is your problem.

Bouncing speedometer needle: Nylon speedometer DRIVEN gear at the end of the cable (inside trans) has stripped teeth, gears inside speedo head worn.

Nylon gear retained to cable w/a C clip, same 16 - 21 toothed gears since 1960. EZ to find, prices range from 3 to 5 bucks. ID by tooth count and color.

No replacement speedometer head gears were ever offered by Ford, but speedo shops have them.

"No replacement speedometer head gears were ever offered by Ford, but speedo shops have them."

There is no Physical connection between the input and the needle.

The input shaft works off of inductive magnets to act upon the disc the indicator is connected to. There is a small wound spring just below the face to bring the unit back to zero. If the head reads below zero there is a zero adjustment tang that can be slightly bent to adjust it. .

Dirt, spider webs and bug crap on the disc accumulates over time and can cause the bouncing as the tolerance is smaller. The slightest drag or friction will bounce it.

There is a helical cut gear on the input that runs a jack-shaft to a second jack-shaft that is in turn connected to the odometer gear.

Try a careful cleaning by taking the unit apart. And clean the cable in kerosene by soaking it along with the sleeve Re lube with white lithium grease. It needs to be really clean as any build up of old lube varnish will cause sticking.

Also check the condition of the Nylon gear in the transmission.
