If I don't ressurect this old Compaq, I will have to get another laptop. I want at least Pentium III, but it won't be my primary machine so I don't want latest and greatest (which depreciates in a couple of years to nothing)
My main computer has Sony Trinitron, which is really nice. By comparison, this Compaq Presario looks really dull and faded. Are all laptops like that?
So question, which laptop has nice display? And also nice keyboard and mouse, these things drive me crazy.
I am thinking Toshiba Satelite, they seem to have nice displays.
I have a Toshiba Satellite and the display on it is very bright...it took my eyes a week or so to get used to watching it. I finally found out how to adjust the brightness and I set it to something that was comfortable for my eyes. My laptop has a touchpad rather than a pointer or trackball, it takes a little getting used to. When I'm at home I still plug in a regular mouse because its quicker than the touchpad. Keyboard...no complaints, once you've used one compact laptop keyboard you've used them all.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A15-S127, and have been very satisfied with it. Bought it in July of last year, not a single problem thus far. The display is good. I have had several people comment on that particular point too. This model has a 30Gb HD, 2.2Mhz processor. Bought this at Circuit City for around $850 after rebates.
I cannot speak about any other notebooks, other than my sister has a H.P., which I wouldn't give you a plugged nickle for. H.P. loads theirs up with proprietary software, mostly junk stuff in my opinion.
I'll say IBM Thinkpads!! I have to be loyal to a company I've worked for almost 32 years!!!
I've got about 40 of these from a customer that were in a store room of unknown condition. They were all abused by salesmen, so it's not IBM's fault they were cracked or otherwise dead
Great displays, new ones are even better. But IBM is pretty pricey compared to the rest.
I'd suggest going to a computer store and browsing for a while - try them all, and see what you can adjust on the display to make it to your liking. Go with new, even if it's a bottom-line version. It's warranteed, and if something is wrong with it out-of-the-box, bring it back to the store and have them give you another one. Be sure to buy from a store with some kind of "satisfaction guarantee" or 30-day return policy. Also, try a few different stores, each one will carry different models and different brands.
If you can find a laptop you like and in the price-range you like, look online and see if you can get a REALLY good deal on it, saving a few $100 is worth the hassle of shipping it back if it's no good.
