Just heard on the news that Gateway Computers is closing all of its retail stores. Except for all the people out of work, not a big loss IMHO. I had a Gateway laptop that was crap and when things broke you could only get it fixed at gateway. My Dad bought a Gatewway desktop and hated it also,
I setup some new Gateways at an office a couple of weeks ago what garbage. I will never get a gateway for my self I want a laptop but I am still researching it.
I went to a Gateway store because I wanted a specific question answered about computer abilities, thinking that stores like Best Buy hire kids who don't know anything. The salesman at Gateway turned out to be dumber than a post, and I was sorely disappointed. I bought a Gateway anyway, primarily because I had just driven 90 miles.
The idea of a Gateway retail store was just plain stupid, IMO. If a company has nothing to offer the customer in a stand-alone store like price, service, or qualified pesonnel what is the good of it? The remaining manufacturers are locked in a life and death struggle and the closing of Gateway's retail stores is an acknowledgement to become more competitive or relevant.
BTW, my Gateway is about 18 months old, I've had no problems to date nor expected any, and would be just as blissfully happy pecking on a Dell or HP. I suspect Gateway is not going to survive.
I am on my 4th Gateway. Never had a problem with any of them. The previous 3 I sold to people I work with. They are still using them.
With them closing their stores though, I doubt I will buy another. I liked the idea of having someplace to go if I ever did have a problem. It was also nice to be able to try before I buy at the stores.
I had one run in with Dell, so I will never again deal with them.
I think for my next one I will probably end up building my own, or having someone nearby build one for me.
I've had one gateway, it's about 3 years old. The hard drive almost died on me because they are terrible but I was able to get the info off it before it roasted itself. Other then that it has been average. I have an HP in my room that I got for about 600 off the regular price, does well.
I have had 3 gateways and none of them have given me any problems. The store idea was only good in one aspect you could see/operate what model you wanted before you ordered it. Otherwise it was really stupid...

I would agree to a point. However, where do you go to fix a Dell or HP that goes out? Also Dell has started to have kiosks in Malls.
Another reason I think they are making a mistake closing the stores is they just started getting into TV, and other A/V products. Would you buy a TV that you have never seen in use. Even if I buy over the internet for a high price product, I will go look at one at a store first.
My friend has a HP he dropped it off lastnight for me to ugrade the system I got 3 worms out of it today because the last time it was scanned was 800+days ago so when I got the worms out of it I put some fresh Memory now the screen went black have any clues to fix these heep? One stick was old the other is new. He is also running windows 2000.Thanks
When I was interested in buying two computers last spring,I tried to do some comparison shopping.I got all the info for a total system from dell, then called gateway and said, this is what Dell has,and it cost this much, can you compete with them? This guy gets real rude and arrogant, starts insulting Dell, and tells me I must not be very smart to even think about trying to compare a Dell to a Gateway.Smart way to get me to buy your product, after that,I now own two Dell computers and smile every time I hear that gateway is going down hill!

Gateway doesn't make hard drives, neither do any of the others. They come from Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, sometimes an IBM or Samsung shows up. They have bad runs sometimes. I've had to replace 2-week-old drives, others of the same brand run 5-6 years without problem. Sort of like cars, there's a few lemons in every batch.

How old is the computer--did it come with Win2000 originally? Does it give the black screen immediately, without ever starting Windows, or does it start and run then black out?
