Transmission Temp

Just bought a F450 with the 7.3L diesel and a custom guage package. Anybody know what the Maximum Transmission temp is while towing? We leave Sunday to drive cross country pulling a heavy trailer and would like to make sure we know. The Ford guy told us that their guys work on hourly wage and he's not paying them to ook things up. Nice eh?

Transmission Temp

I'm not sure what the max temp is, but I've always been told to try not to let it get above 220*-230*F. And the optimum temp. for trans. life is 160*-170*F.
Hope this helps.

"Normal" operating temp is 150-170. You can take it to 180 or 190 without cooking the fluid, but above 180 does shorten the life of the fluid. I think that the fluid change intervals decrease by 1/2 for each 10 degrees above 180. So if you hit 190, the change interval for the fluid should be 1/2 what it was if you only operated at 150-170. At about 220-230, you really start cooking the fluid. If you get the fluid that hot, you need to change it the first chance that you have. It is toasted.

MBRAY...

Although I am running the E4OD tranny in my '97 F250 diesel, I think the same temp regimen is called for. The design operating range for no-load operations is 150 - 170 degrees; this is with non-synthetic fluid.

I am using AMSOIL in my rear and tranny. If I am not mistaken, you already have syn in your diff. Your tranny - ??

In any event we just got back from a 2 month pull thru the Rockies. My average operating tranny temp was approx. 185 degrees as it was all up and down. In addition to the AMSOIL I have a B&M supercooler w/fan installed. This and the AMSOIL kept my tranny temps controllable. I only had to cut in the fan when tranny temps started thru 190 degrees.

If I were you, I would be sure that I had adequate transmission cooling and a fluid that would not break down readilly when heated too high - even if its only occasionally.

Happy trails........
