On the way back from a road trip this weekend the "water in fuel" warning illuminated. According to the owners manual, I was to immediately pull over and drain the little doohicky under the truck (takes a 6mm allen wrench, thanks Ford ). I did this, but didn't detect any water draining, looked like pure diesel to me. This didn't turn off the light. Drove a couple hundred miles home and didn't worry about it, it's still illuminated.
Sorry folks, just saw a great thread on this very question a couple pages down (I really should do a search before wasting forum bandwidth huh?). Anyway, I'll be bringing the truck in for warranty service later this week (replacing inst. panel for fuel guage misread), and I'll have them fix the water separator while they're at it.
2003-2004 6.0 Water In Fuel Lamp Illuminated:
Some trucks may exhibit a water in fuel lamp that continues to illuminate after draining the water separator. This may be due to sedimate build up in the water reservoir. Check the electrical connections at the fuel pump assembly. Remove the fuel manifold and clean it and the water reservoir. Inspect the fuel heater for corrosion. If corrosion is found, replace the manifold with part # 3C3Z-9B249-AB. If no corrosion, replace the manifold gasket, part of kit # 3C3Z-9A343-AA, and reinstall the manifold.
