Does it hurt to use a remote starter with a diesel. I find I get better fuel economy in the Michigan winter if I warm the truck up first, I'm thinking of getting a remote starter for convenience, is there any problems with that??
the local place in my home town said that most remote starters will work on diesels, they usualy have a switch on them that change the normal 6 second wait to 12 second to give the glow plugs time to warm up. i would say just watch it when you start it and dont let it idle to long

A diesel isn't going to really warm up until you drive it. Idling cold for more than a few minutes isn't good for it anyway. The remote starter that I've seen that "work with diesels" work purely on a timer, not by the wait to start light. With the cold winters in Michigan the starter might not have a long enough delay to work with your truck. The best warm up you can do is to plug in the engine block heater and get an oil pan heater to warm up the oil. Plug them in to a timer to turn on 2-3 hours before you want to drive the truck.
I've had a remote starter on my 2000 SD since I bought it. It works directly off the dash light to trigger when to start the truck. It has worked for me every time. The only time I don't like to use it is when it drops below -10 degrees. I like to double key it to give the plugs a little extra time to heat up.
It is a two channel ASTRO-START unit so the same remote will start my truck as well as my wifes car.

Your remote starter starts based on the wait to start light going off? If so, I would like some information on what you have installed. I couldn't find any that worked like that.
Astro-Start 3006. Fairly in-expensive unit. Mine ran about 150 with 250 in labor. Same for the wife's mountaineer.
Brother in law has one on his 2000 psd.
I saw the gob of wires that needed to be hooked up and the labor was worth it.
We haven't had a lick of trouble at all.
I like the temp sentinel. I set it at 25 degrees and it starts every few hours on days where it's below freezing.
Great unit. The alarm comes with it.

Can anyone give me advice on where you have wired your remote starters? I have an E99 and a RS-4 Crimestopper and would like the feature of "turbo cool down" and remote start. I have Ford wire color and descrip. just curious where, and how you connected yours. Thanks
I have a ford remote start that works great will idle for a long time and also works as a turbo timer you just hit the start button befor you turn the key off and it will idle for 3 min then shut down works good if you stop to eat while pulling a big load
I have one and it has a timer that can be set for up to 2 minutes I believe before start-up. I have it set for 60 seconds. The MAIN reason I got it was for the cool down feature it has. I was looking at turbo timers and they were more expensive then the remote start. I have the cool down set for 4 minutes and if I have been towing heavy or running her hard, I will use it. Another thing handy about it for me is if I am running around with the dog in the truck and have to run in to a store while it's hot out, I will leave the truck running either in the cool down feature if I am going to be quick, or the full auto-start and have the AC on for the dog. I love mine.
