I've heard rumors (actually in the owner's manual) that you can't install aftermarket remote starters on these things due to the computer chip in the key. (AKA Securilock or whatever they call it). The F150 cannot be started with any object other than a programmed ignition key. I'm sure someone could hack the wires up and make it work, but is it worth it. I believe Ford offers the only remote start option, but I have no idea of what it cost or even if it's available.
YOMAN, What is it you want the keypad on the drivers side to do for you other than unlock the doors? It is no problem what so ever to get a remote start in these trucks, you just need add a module with a ford key in it up under the dash. I recommend using a uncut key. I would also reccommend using the viper, it is a great product. The viper remote start will come with 2 new keyfobs. It will unlock the doors and turn on the dome light, lock the doors, and start the vehicle.
Remote starter module from Ford works without having an extra key and runs $230.00 and the required Securilok kit is another $32.00 plus installation. You can check it out at (www.fordaccessoriesstore.com).
Here's a question YOMAN...if you get close enough to the truck to use the keypad, wouldn't it be easy enough to open the door and start the truck, then lock it with the pad and return when you're ready?
Remote starts are for starting the vehicle from a distance or from inside on wicked cold or hot days. seems like a lot of money if you want to start the truck from right next to it.
I have a Viper remote start installed on my '03 Screw. From the research I did, the '04 should be no different. What you need is an extra module to talk to the PATS (passive anti-theft system) Ford has. Mine was an extra $50. I can't remember if it disables it or activates it. But for the duration of the remote start, the PATS won't be a problem.
I'd look for a system that uses these modules. There are some that require you to stick a spare key under the dash. This basically permanently disables PATS. The key is always there so PATS thinks you always have a key in the ignition.
One thing I will note about the Viper though. When you hit the unlock key, it unlocks all doors. It's not like the stock system where first press unlocks drivers, then second press unlocks remaining. I think the Ford branded remote start is the only one that leaves that working the same.
I see... good to know...ok, question, what if i am plan to leave truck alone for couple of days (vacation etc), can I just take spare key out of truck to activite PATS??
I don't know for sure. I think it would depend on the system. With the Viper and the module, PATS is on just like normal when you aren't remote starting it.
With the other guys, who knows. That's why I prefer the module type.
On my truck, no spare key is used. Just the module.
