I was driving to lunch today and my message center said ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE. I had never saw that before. The "low fuel" indicator was also on. The first thing I noticed was that the truck's acceleration was sluggish. I couldn't accelerate like I normally do, at least it seemed that way. Also my Cruise Control wouldn't work. Has anyone else had this happen? Is this a way that Ford makes you conserve gas when you're low? I know that after I filled up with fuel it went away. Hopefully there hasn't been a thread on this yet and if there was, I'm sorry. Any info would help. Thanks. -Greg
I read about this at some point in the last few months. If memory serves me, it is a way to conserve fuel when you are very low. It will shut off some of your cylinders. I believe that you are running on either 4 or 6 (on a V8). This should explain the sluggish acceleration.
I think it is only supposed to happen when you are running on fumes. See what happens when you fill the tank.
Looks like you're a victim of the "limp mode" problem. Oh boy.
I've found hundreds of owners who are experiencing this problem, and there doesn't appear to be a long-term fix at this time. Some are having re-flashes and some are having new throttle bodies, or both. I had a re-flash, but the problem continues to show its ugly face. If Ford doesn't get it figured out soon, I'll be going through dispute settlement for a full refund.
BTW, the "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE" on trucks with a message center is the same as the "wrench light/limp mode" on non-message center trucks.
Limp mode has nothing to do with "conserving fuel" or indication of a low fuel tank. Sorry. (however, the engine can shut down cylinders if a high coolant temperature, or overheat problem is experienced). It is defect, and happening to many brand new trucks.
Please post your build date, and any service that your dealer performed. If there's a solution out there, many of us would like to know what it is.
