I have a 96 high top conversion van. The top is clear coat and looks good. The rest is in good shape except for dull paint.
I was planning on buffing it once the weather warms.
I have one of those Sears oscilating buffers, but I need something better for the black paint. Has anybody been there, done that? A buffer and compound brands would be appreciated.
I just watched an episode of Trucks, last week, where they showed how to revive old paint. Can't remember all the exact products they used, but it was all Meguiars stuff. I just checked out their site and found out they have some video clips with the info you might need (kinda long videos, so I didn't watch it all). Find in fo here: http://www.meguiars.com/clinics/clinics_template.cfm
I had a Black '96 E350 and used Meguires cleaner/wax and Mothers cleaner/wax. Both worked well, but didn't last as long as I thought they should. I wheeled the paint with both products and also did it by hand.
For the best result I wheeled it with Malco True-Grit cutting compound which really smooths out the paint. (The cleaner/wax just can't do it) Then you can use 3M Finesse It II to polish it even more. Or you can skip the the glaze and go right to waxing it.
Thanks for taking the trouble to help out. Good tips. I'll cruise the local parts store..see what's what. Maybe something real new and easy will be there. Long time ago I buffed out a 59 Galaxie with a lamb's wool bonnet and polishing compound..3M I think. Worked well, but I hear black picks up swirl marks easy.
Have to say I'm impressed with the lack of rust on this 96. My last Ford van was an 85...started rusting within 2 or 3 years. Something improved there in the paint, I guess.
