Buffing out paint

Hey guys,
I was wondering what the procedure would be to bring back faded paint? I don't believe my truck need a paint job as it looks pretty good when washed (suits me). But I would like to make it shiny again. Do you go with the rubbing compound? Do I need a buffer? It is the original factory paint ('83) but it doesn't appear to be thin anywhere except the top of the cab and you can't see that unless you're in the bed. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Chuck

I have had great result with this process, but I am not an expert:

You will first need to "Clean" the paint which will restore the paint. You can really use any brand of paint cleaner, I wouldn't use rubbing compound. I persoanlly like Meguiar's, so I use Meguiar's Premium Paint Cleaner - it's great.

You will then need to "Polish" the paint. This will give the paint a wet look and create a mirror like finish.

Lastly, seal the paint with a good Carnuba wax.

You don't need a power polisher, if you are willing to put in some elbow grease. Always use a different cloth for the different steps.

Some of the larger companys sell a 3 step process which works really good.

First try a small area of your paint - I hope you will be amazed with the results.

RG.

Hey Chuck! I've been detailing for about ten years now and old paint is very unpredictable. Sometimes it shines up with compound and other times it fades it even more. I would say try a good wax first and put a couple of coats on it. I personally use Zymol, it has worked great for me. They also have a soap that does not take wax off. If that does not work, then you may want to try compound. Watch out for swirl marks. Mike
