hey everyone. I was just curious if any of you have ever trapped before. It is getting to be more and more uncommon these days, mostly due to low prices of fur and the time required. I used to trap quite a bit. Mostly coyotes, coons, muskrats and a skunk or badger on occation. I quit trapping during high school, because I did not have the time to check sets daily. It is takes some dedication and work, but is fun due to the challenge.
Trapping is a challange. I dont see the enjoyment of trapping an animal, or the challange. I'm not a PETA kinda guy, and your entitled to your lawful practices of trapping. But really, I dont see it. Well, maybe wild hogs, but they taste good.
Why wouldn't it be challenging. Most wild animals are very cautious and a trapper needs to make a set that will fool them. I guess I can say that is is more rewarding than it is fun. Of course, I do not eat anything that I trap, but the animals are a nuisance and need to be managed. I like spotlighting for varmints and calling coyotes, but I see nothing wrong with trapping. I am not trying to offend anyone with this topic, but just wondering if anyone else out there traps.
Dont get me wrong, I wasnt offended. I feel animals have feelings and emotion. I wouldnt wanna be trapped. I just think thats a fair implication for myself.....I wouldnt wanna be trapped, so I dont. I wasnt trying to infringe on your right, or say you're wrong.
Coyotes, as many other animals, for example.....they serve a good purpose. I catch them eating the afterbirth of cows all the time. Cool by me.....if they start chasing after the calf, and the mamma or heard cant run them off(like a pack).....they'll have a .30 inch hole on one side, and much bigger on the other. Actually I had a couple of coyotes raising pups out there somewhere earlier this spring, saw them on occasion, I let em be. Have tons of rabbitts for them. For me its all a matter of nature and the peacefulness of country living. I try to let nature be nature the best I can.
Shoot em for sport....nope, I wouldnt want to be shot. Infestation, destruction, starvation........fix it quick and as painless as possible. For fun.....no, I'll pass.
I did not think that you were offended, and I am not offended by your opinion either.
There is a coyote problem around here. They get a newborn calf or a sheep on occasion and they do not do any good for the game bird and rabbit population either. Jackrabbits are somewhat of an endangered species now. Where one of my friends lives, one of his neighbors got 300 in one winter and it did not have an apparent effect on the number of coyotes. A couple of times, they actually ate on a cow having trouble calving.
If a trapper is responsible, the animals will not experience any terrible pain. If the traps are checked daily, the animal can be taken care of quickly. Also, I use snares and conebear traps for many sets, which take care of the animal instantly. Live traps are also very humane. I respect animals myself, so I am not going to torture them. I do hunt for sport at times, but I see nothing bad about it if it is helping with wildlife managment.
There we go, no one is offended........now what fun is that. It sounds like a big problem with coyotes, it needs fixed, and I'm all for it. Armadillos around here were shot for fun, sport, and becuase people felt they were a threat or something......now, cant find one anywhere. Doves are sometimes pretty rare....people go crazy around here at Dove season. They shoot em, rip off the breast meat, and leave Dove carcases everywhere. Some fool got on the property and went hunting two years ago, left a pile of dead birds for me. That was a little uncalled for. We talked about it. He came last year, but this time he knocked on the door first, and left not one dead bird for me. Wow, I've been for way too long.
Ya know how to trap fire ants..........we need any help we can get...but then again......no one has seen a tick in something like 30 years.
What kind of doves do you have down there? I hunt mourning doves from time to time. They are pretty fun to hunt, because they are fast and hard to hit. I only take the breast meat, but the cats get the rest, so its all good.
