I'm sure someone has already asked this question before however; considering there are tens of thousands of members and threads to match, I thought it would be faster to repost the question then to spend hours searching.
A friend of mine gave me a Holley 4bbl 600 cfm carburator that has only seen a few thousand miles of use. He wanted something bigger for his engine build and gave it to me thinking that I could use it someday. Well, can I use on a stock 351M with a carb. adapter? Are there any benefits? Would I lose my estimated 14 mpg highway figure?
I thought I read somewhere that with the right amount of intake velocity that this type of application would work just fine.
I've used a Carter 625 on my 400 with a Mr. Gasket (1955 I think) 2x4 adapter. It worked alright.. they are very holy so they can be hard to seal and keep sealed. I swapped over to a Edelbrock performer 400 intake and it made a world of difference.
Most carb makers don't like the use of 2x4 adapters (found this out after reading the fine print.. )
So, if I can get a new intake manifold, are there any made for EGR provisions? I have to have this on the truck in order to past the emissions test next year. Or would I be better off with a larger 2V carburetor?
Edelbrock makes the Performer EGR 4V p/n 3771 manifold which when installed with the included 2V adapter is CARB approved as a stock replacement part. If you remove the 2V adapter and install the 4V adapter you can mount any square bore 4V carb on it. Note: The Performer EGR is a 4V manifold which comes with a 2V adapter to make it emissions legal. The 4V adapter is available from Edelbrock or you can buy one from FoMoCo as well.
What bill said. But keep in mind the edelbrock 3771 is only smog-legal if you use the 4-to-2 bbl adapter and keep your stock 2-bbl carb. (at least here in Cali.)
This is because these motors (351m/400) never came with a 4-bbl from the factory. Of course, it might be simple enuf to swap out the adapter and carb between smog checks...
