Hey, that looks really good, nice fab. Now I feel like a pus for buying my cowel. Why is it called a "Red Green" air cleaner mod? Very creative.

You never seen The Red Green Show on PBS?! Man, you're missin out. Makes duct tape more than just a binding material. He makes it a way of life. Said a really easy and cheap way to change the exterior of your house is to use half-bricks and duct tape instead of the expensive vinyl siding. Friggin hysterical.

Last night I had thought about going to a stock air cleaner and running a tube from the nozzle to the cab to hold me over until I get a hood scoop. That was a great idea for the air cleaner modification Kevin. Do you just rivet the scoop on and then glass it in? I've got a buddy who will paint it for me but if I leave it to him to put the scoop on it could be quite a while before I see it.

I was going to buy one, too. Even had it ordered, but I cancelled. I was cutting one out of cardboard to see what size I would like. It was too flimsy so I took the sheet metal panels off an old office desk, cut 'em out and tack welded them together. It just went on from there. In about 3 hours I had it all welded and ground down ready to put the ridge on. For that, I used a 1/4" dia. steel driveway marker stake and tack welded it down the center. I used body filler to finish it off.

I spent 3 days staring at the air cleaner trying to figure out how to get it through the hood. I didn't have room to come out the side of the filter box so I went through the top with two 2"x4" tubes (made from the desk scraps). There was no way to go right through the hood with those so I made the box (from more scraps) and put 3" PVC right where I wanted them. I actually had it all duct taped together to test fit it and that's what reminded me of Red Green.

People still look at it and say "What the **** is THAT!?!

I just say "FREE".

The Red-Green show is a must watch Pro! Some of the funniest "fab" work I have ever seen in my life. Now if that air cleaner would have been made of 2 coffee cans and duct tape with a sofa pillow instead of foam for sealing it . . . you MIGHT have qualified for Red-Green.

I bolted it down onto a thin bead of bondo, and used more bondo to finish it off. It's a horrible bondo job if you see it in the light, but it matches the rest of the body.

these k&n things do the trick for me...and they make your air filter last 10 times as long. they got em in jegs and summit for pretty cheap

Well, the old snout style air cleaner was a whopping success . . . NOT! I don't know how it happened but I actually had worse problems with the snout than with the open filter. This time it managed to clog and gum up enough to where I couldn't get my truck to idle at under 2K. Pulled it all apart today and the intake was full of mud and crud. Nothing a pressure washer couldn't fix but I feel sorry for my heads.

I ordered a cowl scoop last night. I'm thinking about using a velocity stack to raise the filter into the scoop and just cutting a hole for it so that's the only thing that can stick through. Hey Pro, do you ever have trouble with water/mud coming off your windeshield and into the scoop or does it all vaporize and turn to cloud at that elevation?

I've NEVER had water ingestion problems with my 86 with just the stock air cleaner on it, and, this morning, there was a heck of alot more mud under my hood than there looks to be under yours. Perhaps just the difference in the body styles sends the mud flying different ways, and perhaps also that I have a full shroud on the rad, which I find really helps stop the fan from throwing water everywhere.
One time, when I changed the fluids after a romp, I got a gallon of straight water out of the t-case, and both diffs were beyond just a bit contaminated, my breathers are located about halfway up the firewall, yet, I never got anything in the engine...
Personally, I'm going to add a snorkel to the stock unit, probably run it into the cab, and call it good.

yeah but 82f100, he was in some pretty deep water going pretty fast, and its worse than it looks in the picture too..

Its hard to tell past my oxygen mask

I think if I had less lift, and hit deep enough wet slop hard enough like Dan did (I don't think you can tell in the vid, but from in the cab I could see that stuff wash over the hood, windsheild AND cab) it would pose a problem. As it is, I haven't had any problems...I'll still get splatter through my prefilter (looks like what Ho has) and onto my K&N regular filter, but nothing has ever gotten through the inner filter. I think with less lift I'd still run the filter/prefilter, but also put a lip at the rear of the hood between the cowel opening and the filter to help divert away a solid wash of water like you see in the vid.

What filter were you using btw, thats allota mud to get through...

That picture was taken after I hosed the engine off. I ordered an electric fan so hopefully I'll get that in there this week and it will help a bit. The top half of my shroud disintegrated last week when I hit the mud . . . don't know if something got thrown into it or what happened but that probably didn't help matters. If I get the fan in I'll replace the shroud too (and probably my radiator as it needs it)

I'm thinking next time I need to block off my grill to prevent all this crap from coming in there in the first place. I had crap leaking in through the grommets in my firewall! One thing I will say, the MSD distributor never has a problem with moisture getting into it.

It was a new Fram POS that I bought to fit that cleaner with the snout. I thought it was a surefire way to keep the junk out but this is how we learn. I've got a spare grill at home so I'd like to rivet a piece of sheet metal to the back of it and then just pop it in when I go in the deep mud. This would still leave about 6" between the blocked grill and the radiator so it can suck some air from the top and bottom. I don't think I'll have any cooling problems as the new fan is 3300 CFM.

What I was thinking would be really trick is to build a flap at the back of the scoop that I could control with a cable so I could close it up right when I hit the slop.

Oh lord oh lord what's happening to me? I decided Saturday night that I won't be putting power windows in my truck, not even sure about power locks now . . . and the Boston Accoustics speakers may soon be replaced with a marine speaker because I found it's far easier to just hose off the inside of the door than to wipe all the mud off.

Pretty soon we'll have you hanging some flexible hose off the snout, and routing it back through the firewall into the cab. You might as well give it up now...theres no turning back...you've become strong with the dark side

Ivan, you could put a mud/snow shield in front of the air cleaner. Sort of like a big U in front of the filter. Sort of like taking an air cleaner, removing the top, cutting it in 1/2 and facing the metal U left frontwards withthe open part towards the rear, with little wings extending off the side. Cuts down on air flow a bit, but, not that much. Works better if it seals against the hood.

There is a Ford truck somewhere that came stock with a set up sort of like this. Can not remember which one though. Might have been on a FT engine.
