Ahahahaha you are sooooooooooooooo funny. Thats right, thats where we parked for lunch and watched whats his face blow up the tranny in his chevy. Later I saw him getting towed out of there and he was getting cited by a cop for open container. Not a good day for him.
Hey Dan, do you have Jeff's footage from that day? He said he had me on it damn near rolling going up firebreak five. Then again, he might be being dramatic. I've never seen it...
I have it. I need to find a way to copy it. I have a buddy comming down from Portland tomorrow for a few weeks. I'll either send it back with him, or just mail it.
that would be hella sweet. I need to start gathering up all the random bits of footage people have of the '73 floating around and post it on here before these guys eat me alive
Thread hijack (sorry Ivan): Dan, did you end up putting in those alloy axles?
edit: and for those of you wondering, in that footage we're playing in one of the "tiny" holes up at the St. Helens mud bog

The other half was supose to arrive Friday. They are going to call Warn (again) Monday to find out where they are. I was promised them over a month ago
Have you extended your axle/tranny breathers yet? If not that should be up there on your list too. I have mine all run together under the truck and then come up the shifter for my T-18. So long as my hand isn't wet, they're breathing.
Does this make it smell like hot gear oil in your cab???
Yeah, but I don't really think it smells that bad. If I had an LS there is NO WAY i'd run them in the cab. If someone is riding with me that has an issue it's no biggie to just either tuck the tube back under the truck or run an extension tube out the pass through, but most people write it off as "it's Justin's truck, it's supposed to be like that" and just roll the window down .
I also get that alot for my tires chirping from the spool, they just accept that and no one says anything. I could run a blown 460 with open headers and roll into the senior high lot and no one would think anything of it. (I'm definitely doing it with my 300 once i'm done with it, just once at least )
Holy crap Dan, that video is crazy! I can't believe you didn't choke out your engine with that tsunami. I could barely keep my truck running when I hit the water, coughed and sputtered and a lot of white smoke . . . though nowhere near that bad.
Any particular brand recommended on the electric fan? Some are pretty pricey. I checked out the boneyard today but I don't have much clearance between my pulley and radiator, probably about 4" max. Didn't find anything that would work.
Justin, what I was thinking of doing (when I get off my lazy butt) is venting my axles into my tool box. They'd stay dry but I wouldn't have to deal with all that stink. It may also be time to add a cowl induction hood scoop.
I've run 'em in cab too and never thought the smell was that bad. 'Sides, thats why they invented those little pine trees Thats a good point about not wanting to do it with limited slips though...the oil you have to use with those hella stinks. I mean, damn. On my '73 I run all my vents into a filter that runs up my firewall, stays nice and dry. Ivan, I got a 2" cowl scoop for from Harwood and it flows perfectly with the lines of the Ford hood. I wish I would have gotten the 4" now though. They look good though.
Tool box idea is pretty clever by the way, sounds good.
Pro, which model is that scoop you have? One of the Z-28's? Then I'll really be needing those Iroks. I've had a hard time finding one with a nice center line to match up with the hood. Eventually, when I get a blower on there, I want a 6" to cover the whole thing for when I'm getting it dirty but I may see about buying a 3" or 4" for now and raising my breather a few inches.
As for the water splashage on the air cleaner, you can get a small sheet of tin and make a shield that goes around the front but leaves the back completely open. In times of need, tho, a 12-pack box folded just right will serve the same purpose; just something to shield off the elements from the front of the air cleaner.
Hey Kevin, I went to the one up north. Didn't know there was an ORV area in the valley! I'm going to have to check that out. It was good fun but the mud is not really gooey right now, just some DEEP puddles and good hills of course.
Btw, I got your e-mail. I'm going to head up to Waitts lake as soon as I get my intake gasket replaced. I'm losing oil too fast to go any kind of distance right now and I've just been too lazy to replace it when I can put another quart in instead.
We'll have to get together one of these days and bury a rig when we've got another one to pull it out with. How's the old lady liking her 4x4?
Were going to ORV park this saturday, more of a "to make sure everything works" trip and a wheelin' lesson than anything for her, my brother is taking his bronco, and he doesnt need any lessons We will definitely have to hook up sometime, Im really trying to get my truck running and painted, but I lack time more than money
I guess the one in the valley is just for 4 wheelers and stuff, sorry to get you excited about nothing
Ivan, I don't recall which number it was but its a harwood 2" cowl scoop I ordered from Summit. It has a crest right down the center that matches the 73+ hoods perfectly.
I had that same problem on my 78. I ditched the open-element air cleaner and went with the stock air cleaner, but still had the fan throwing water/mud into it. I tried turning the horn around to the back and it didn't help much either.
My latest solution was a 4" cowl induction scoop and a "Red Green" air cleaner modification. You can see it here .
It's not in the photo, but I put a flange on the round tubes with a foam rubber gasket that seals it to the underside of the hood. It allows the engine and body to move without loosing the seal.
I haven't tested it on the trails yet, but I did run it at 70 mph in a down-pour on Sunday with no problems. Except for running out of gas.
Also, running the diff and t-case vents into the cab is a good idea. Mine all run into a hole in the firewall up under the dash. With all the other smells my truck emits, I don't even notice the dif smell.
