Got my '89 F150 XLT 4x4 awhile ago - according to the manual it has the accessory position past the lock position (farthest CCW) - mine won't go there...can't get it past lock position...tried all my keys etc
I can only get the radio to work with the key on...any ideas?
love my new truck...forum has been great with info..
If you have the time, take the steering column cover panel off, loosen the 2 bolts that hold up the column to the dash. If you have a A/T, be carefull of the plastic cable for the shift indicator. At the lower portion of the column you will see a slide switch with a large connector attached to it. This is you ignition switch. It is held in with 2 bolts. Check to see if the switch is loose or improperly adjusted. To go alittle further, remove the 2 bolts that hold the column. If A/T, support the wheel or have someone hold it for you. If you break the indicator string, it is a b**ch to change. Disconnect the harness plug to the switch. Remove the 2 bolts attaching the switch. Lift out the wire that goes up to the tumbler(where your key goes in). Turn the tumbler to make sure it rotates freely and not jammed. If tumbler rotates, you probably have a bad switch which is not uncommon on the Fords. Had to change many of them.
Good luck.
Thanks for the responses - switch may be bad but so far I can move the key physically past the first position (won't move ccw at all once the key is put in) - once I can move it there the switch may work....
I guess someone along the way may have replaced it with the wrong type that doesn't go ccw or maybe it's just frozen solid...
Might try a squirt of WD 40. I used it once when I had a similar problem. Lock graphite in the spray can works also. Just a little bit though. If you'd rather not spray it in the switch, spray the key, then try putting it in the switch. Good luck.
I have a similar situation. (its a 91 diesel f250) My key will go to the accy position but nothing is energized, no radio nothing. thaught it was because its a diesel but I am not sure.
