1989 F-150 lost ignition key

I hate joining a new forum just to ask a question but I'm having trouble finding the correct answer.

I've lost the keys for my 89 F-150 that has been parked in the back yard for 3+ years, I wanted to pull it out and get it going again but without the keys I'm stuck. I've read several threads and watched youtube videos with conflicting info but one thing that really has me stuck if that it seems you have to have the switch in the "run" position to remove the lock cylinder. How can you put the switch in the run position without a key.

If anyone has detailed instructions and can pass them along I would appreciate it.

Thanks

welcome to FTE.
your choices are either to call a locksmith, drill out the ignition, or replace the column. the cheapest option usually is to replace the column if you do not want to drill it out.

Ouch! OK, can yo be a little more specific on the drilling out? Do you mean just drill the little rod that holds it in?

I had the opposite problem where I didn't have to have a key to start the truck. When I went to replace the cylinder, the retaining rod was stuck. I tried to drill but had trouble staying on the pin and was afraid of taking too much of the column. A punch and a 9 lb hammer knocked the pin in enough for me to pull the cylinder. I have named that hammer the "Ford Wrench"

yup, drill out the pin that holds the cylinder in the column.
that is why i say it is usually easier and cheaper to replace the column. a good column with key is usually only around $25 from a junk yard.

OK, thanks. I'll have to take a closer look at the column, it seems like that would be much more involved but maybe is simpler that I thought.

Thanks
