when i bought my 84 ranger with a 2.8L i thought it was pretty much stock engine wise. well ive been getting really really crappy gas milage . like 12mpg. well we went to look at the carb today and it looked just like the 2bbl on my best friends 390. we stared thinking this cant be right. by the look its got some sort of adapter plate and a spacer. did these come with these huge 2bbls or were they supposed to come with rinky dinks. and my buddys 351M has the same carb just none of the emmisons hookups but i only have 2 or 3 so PLZ HELP ME
The feedback carbs on those engines gave all kinds of trouble. I'm not surprised that the carb has been replaced -- but I would be surprised if any sort of adaptor plate was needed. A 3/8" or sp spacer, yes, but no adaptor. If the carb is entirely too big for this engine, you probably wouldn't be able to get the idle speed under 1000RPM -- maybe even 1200RPM.
You have to start by figuring out what you've got -- and that includes the ignition and computer stuff, too. When that stuff fails, and the air police allow it, the shadetree types usually replace the distributor and carburator together 'cause it costs less and performs better than rebuilt stock parts
I have the same kind of engine, 84, 2.8, original motorcraft 2V, feedback. Idles smooth, good vacuum, acceleration, dies at road speed, double checked everything after carb rebuild, still does it.
she drives fine until you get about a mile and a quarter of open road, then, it won't do anything but idle. I have two 302 2V's a '77 and a '78, and the gasket set said it serviced all three. Anyone know what jets I should use, I know the '77 302 carb works fine, I just replaced it with a 4V for better gas mileage.
P.S.- where do you get a cam kit, or fuel sending unit, can't find either one
maybe thats why she idles so high in park and neutral. i tried to turn down he idle but it wont go any lower. no tach but i sure can tell u its over 1000 rpm just by the sound. but by what u guys said it is possible to have a carb off of somthing like a 390 or other large motor?
That's about what I get with my 83 plow truck. There is a big spacer (3/4" or so) between the manifold and the carb. The truck runs pretty good, but the mileage sucks! Maybe I should fix the leak in the tank!
I'm trying my 302 carb. Just rebuilt, and now the 302's got a 4bbl, I know the carb is good, and the carb is stamped the same flow rate (1.08 - 287 CFM) as the feedback, only no pesky electronics to foul up. Just don't know how the computer will react without the throttle position sensor, original distributor hookup.
There is a key to those flow numbers somewhere in here, found them yesterday. might be helpful.
