I spent 5-6 hours looking through the forums for a problem like this with no avail. I found a wealth of info, but this may be a new one.
2000 Explorer 2WD, 4 speed O/D auto transmission. 97K miles
Will not move in reverse. Engine revs like it's in neutral.
When I shift into D from P it won't move, but if I shift into 1 then back to D it will go. Doesn't seem to be slipping (no over-rev between gear changes) but won't shift from 1-2 or 2-3 unless I let off the throttle. Doesn't slip under heavy acceleration. Shifts smoothly if I do it manually.
O/D light flashing. Dealer says several codes, including Gear 1 improper ratio. Fluid is the right color and doesn't smell burned. Ford dealer will make the problem go away for $2800, thank you very much, but I have a hard time believing that it's that serious. I don't even think they pulled the pan, just plugged in the computer.
Should I get a second opinion and/or check the codes myself? Should I push to get a more in-depth diagnosis? I can do some basic wrench-turning and electrical testing if someone can point me in the right direction as to what to look at.
Thanks in advance for any response. If you have any opinion at all I surely welcome it.
I would suggest ,first pull the codes yourself.See if there may be another sensor or circuit that is bad and effecting the tranny operation.Check the electrical connectors on the MLPS and at the solenoid pack on the tranny. Also if there has been any repairs made that would require unplugging the main harness to the engine, check that the connector is firmly seated. Disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour or so to reset the CPM and see if the problem returns. Bad connectors or wiring, bad grounds will effect the electronic control of the E4OD transmission.
If your tranny does not have reverse at any time then you are having hydraulic problems. The electrical system has nothing to do with reverse on that transmission. The drive problem also sounds like a hydraulic problem. You could have a sticking valve in the valve body, a bad pump, or seal problems. The electrical part of the tranny only tells it when to shift. It has no affect on initial engagement. By the way......... your tranny is called the 4R40E if it is the four speed you said. If it's the five speed then it's the 4R55E. Sounds to me like you might as well take to Ford and let them put a reman in it.
By the way........... it would be nice if some of the people on these forums would read the question and understand the problem before giving someone an answer that will only confuse them more........... even worse when it is totally incorrect and the person seems to not know anything regarding the subject involved. The Ford Explorer has never and will never have a E4OD tranny in it....... Ford has not even produced the E4OD since the mid 90's. Today the similiar tranny is called the 4R100E.
I have a similar problem and would deeply apreciate the same TRUTH or guesses! 1993 E150 Van. 160,000 m. with fluid and filter changed at 123,000 m. No slippage and no change in shifting through forward gears including OD. But, no reverse at all. No change in idle speed, no burnt smell in fluid, fluid level good, even under load shifts great in all but reverse.
