A buddy of mine stopped by today because his tranny is acting weird. 89 7.3 with banks turbo auto. He can drive it forward, but it won't shift into reverse or neutral. The shifter and linkage moves and you can feel the detent for each gear position, it just stays in forward gear. Park engages but there's still a pull on the engine, and if you try to rev it up in park it's definitely still in gear. I guess it shifts normal except it won't shift into o/d. Anyone have any ideas. I told him to drop the pan and take a look, but I guess he doesn't really know what he's doing. I'm just looking for some hints or someone who's experienced this so I can lead him in a direction or give me a head start if I can help him out.
Before condemning, you may want to drop the pan and verify that the manual valve is still hooked up to the shift lever.
That's a waste of time and effort. See below:

If it shifts in and out of park, and then down to drive, the linkage is all intact.
Sorry, that's not correct. The manual valve is actuated by a little lever and pin coming off the shift linkage. The detent and park pawl mechanism is completely seperate and will still function mormally even if the manual valve is completely missing.
If somone was in the transmission before, it's entirely possible that they didn't hook the manual valve back up to the lever correctly.
Maybe your time is super valuable and worth $500/hr, but spending 10 minutes to drop a pan is worth it to me before condeming a $1500 transmission.

Thanks for the replies guys. He's afraid to look at it I guess, says the only way an auto works is because there are wizards inside. I'm gonna have him bring it over and pay me half what the tranny shop is gonna charge him!
