If you could enter this how or what would you build? Heres what i'd build:
I would use a regular cab/box F-250 with a 4:10 dana 50 ttb up front. In the rear i would find a matching dana 50 ttb, and both will be steered by hydralics with one ram on each wheel protected by some very strong skid plates/bracing. The axles will have leaf spring with 10 inches of travel, thee axle will have a custom 4 link/or custom radius arms to keep them ttbs straight and strong, they will also be reinforced and bent so the camber is right, and have homemade lockers. Then the frame will be reinforced, with a roll cage that is identical to that of the truck. The motor of choice would be a low compression 460/429 with 4 barrel carb, and upgraded ignition and either a turbo off a 1 ton diseal or triple t-bird/lebarron/laser/talon turbos or twin turbos off a toyata supra, but probably a 1 ton diseal turbo, and all of this running on AV gas assuming 8:1 compression and probably around 10-13psi of boost with minor mods to the turbos. Now that should should crank out some torque. that will be backs by a c6 tranny and np203 transfercase(the gear one). Then for tires probably some industrial tires or mud tires of about 35 inches in diameter on reinforced rims. Then for brakes each axle will have its own master cyclinder for better braking. The hydralic system will be powered by a high presure, high volume pump run of the crank. This should be the $3000 that they are allowed to use if not just a little bit over cause the majority of this stuff can be found at the junkers or a farmers back yard.
Thats what i would do, what would you build? Anyway i think there should be a FTE team for this or something like that.

82' Flareside: zoom zoom doesn't even begin to describe it, 2/4 Drop, High Compression 66' 289 backed by a toploader 4 speed and a 3.00:1 9 incher, American Racing AR-23 (series 23) wheels, Upgraded interior, Sony Xplod stereo
It is a show on TLC where they have teams from all over the world compete with home-made vehicles. There are weight restrictions, time lines and a budget. All followed by a series of competitions designed to test the vehicles to the extreme. Go to http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/fmc/fmc.html

Keep it Rubber Side Down!
I would build something similar, but with straight axles or real IFS/IRS not ttb, and an n/a 300-6, running about 10.5:1 compression, with a ZF 5-speed, Klune V underdrive, and a 205 case(that's the gear one).
Just from watching tnhe show here is wha i gather. Id start with the oldmans 79 F-250. 1) you need good medum sized tires 33-35" siped to hell to get good traction on the wet. Posibly foam or calcuim filled. 2) a low center fo gravity. so maybe a stock frame would be pefect, the foam filled tires come into effect here too. 3) strong axles for the weight of the vehicle being used dana 60's. 4) good strong trany, c6 with a cooler and fans and a shift kit. 5) NP205 6) 351 modifed set back abot a foot for better front back weight distibution. Short wheel base.
The other choice of axles would be rockwell 2 1/2ton units(i know where i can get em from a local that collects this stuff.
