The muffler has absolutely nothing to do with smog control. It can however help to reduce "noise" pollution.
Never meant to give people the impression that removing a muffler was an EPA no-no. Just playing with the cats.
I've been told by numerous mechanics (week-end and professional) that the factory cats are considered high flow. However, leaving the closest to the head and removing the furthest should give enough back pressure, unless the furthest cat is the more restrictive.... they look identical on the outside to me.
Chevmaninaford-
I am not sure of the manufacturer, since I bought my truck used, but the dual cat-back system I had previously had a muffler with a code of H8J 926 stamped into it. I figure it was a cheap knock-off to sell the truck - it was installed 6 months before I bought it, since I saw the receipt and the total was under $300 CAN. Also the whole system rusted off the truck within a year after I bought it and was only clamped together - not welded. It did give a nice mellow grumble at idle and light throttle, and got the neighbors attention when I drove up. I had the truck canopy and bolt-ons store manager tell me it sounded like his 4.6L Flowmaster system. It was not loud until the rpm's went up. I've looked at a similar bolt on Summit system for around $190.
I know you're not asking but, ChevmaninaFord, in the future for performance gains I'd say any change should be made closer to the head. Perhaps a true dual and headers to match. Like I said, I saw no change in performance from cat-back duals back to a straight pipe. The rumble is louder without the muffler.
there is a chenge in performance. its proven but dyno. it there wasnt any change in performance then whye change the exhaust system at all and why would the after market make them to sell. i got straight on my truck and got better milage and more power with it. it just put my power higher up in the RPM range but not alot higher.
I never said there wasn't a difference from stock to aftermarket or custom. Man, people are reading all sorts of stuff into what I write.
We're still talking about an exhaust upgrade either way...Chevman just wanted to know what sounded good and asked about straight pipes...gave him a comparo as I've had all three systems.
Then to give a little more insight I sugested the next way to get more performance was to go closer to the motor... that would be a waste of time with a stock exhaust from the headers back... don't ya think? Geez
does putting dual exhaust effect the performance ...if so why just leave it alone. just for the sound? ...I was thinking about leaving single exhaust with a flowmaster muffler....any thoughts or iddeas???
When you say duel exhaust do you mean you put a exhaust pipe from each converter and eliminated the y-pipe? Then ran the pipes to the rear of the truck or out the side by the rear tire? Will this cause the check engine light to come on? I am in Ft. Worth ( smog check )and it won't pass inspection if the engine light is on. This is the type of system I want to install.
there is a way you can run true duals and still pass emisions. i have talked to a few people that have. the f150's have 4 O2 sensors. aslong as you change the things behind them you should be ok. the problem with true duals is clearance to run both cause the pipes will not be equal. you would prolly be better of to run a full system from the headers back. there are some 3" systems out there for them.
That sounds good, I know that they will be unequal lenghts. Just wanted to know if the check engine light would come on...I have been told it would..I didn't see how the computor would know......I don't want to spend the amount of money it would take to put headers on also I don't like the tinney sound headers make. I will try the duel exhaust with mufflers then may go ahead and install a Procharger on my 1999 F150 Scab ,4.6,3.55 gears....
in ohio the e check is now a stand still test. they do not put the vehicle on the rollers and run it. they do it at idel and take the readings from there. they got things not where i can get away with not cats at all. my 4.6 with 3.55 gears sounds great with the y pipe. i am going to get headers and a micro tuner after i lower it.
the cats will make some differance. they will create back preassure and keep your power at a little lower RPM. but from what i hear factory cats are flow anyways.
I have a 99 f150 with a 4.6L and the beauty of this year not sure about any others is that mine did not turn into one pipe until the muffler. I cut out the muffler leaving two complete separtate pipes put 2 1/2" pipe on that straight out the back with two 3" diameter 18" long tips on and have gotten many compiments not just from ford fans but from chevy and chrysler fans also.
