I am thinking about putting straight pipes on my 99 4.6L. Does anyone have these on their 4.6? If so, does it sound good, or better do you have a sound file i can download. I have some friends with Z71s with straights, and they all sound good. Appreciate any help.
i have a custom exhaust on my truck with noy mufflers. they just cut my muffler off and y'ed off from there. its shouds great. if you are standing at the back of there truck when it is started you can feel the rumble then and while its ideling. i also had a 1997 5.4 L with the same exhaust. i am looking into getting a set of headers and maybe a set of high flow cats. i just hope then it is not to loud. i sometimes set off car alarms at times now. also be sure to get the 20 or 21 inch 3 and a half inch rond tips. be carefula bout what stainless tips you get if you do because they will yellow cause of the heat. if you have any more questions let me know.
I put straights on my '97 with a 4.6 and I have gotten a lot of compliments on the sound. It has a deep throaty sound to it. Relatively quiet inside the cab.
Ok, sounds good, thanks for all the help guys. I just didnt wanna throw out 300 bucks for a Flowmaster, even though they are good, I just wanted a little more.
i've got a 98 5.4L w/ no mufflers and just recently cut my cats off as well....WOW!! it will make a harley sound like a honda. go straight pipes...you'll get the head turns you deserve for relatively cheap
i also have dual exhaust on my truck, what i did was cut out the back cats on each side, i gutted them out, and than welded them back in place, i left the front cats alone, than i have a y pipe, and no mufflers, it is nice and loud, gets a little annoying though going past 70 mph.
Anytime you remove a sensor from the system you'll get a check engine light, so removing the O2's will give you the check engine light and the codes to back it up. The PCM fails safe and puts a generic input in the missing sensors place. It's designed to limp you along until it's repaired. I have heard people bypass the O2 sensors with a resistor or someother plug in.
In places where emissions tests don't happen, you won't get caught with missing emissions equipment. It's a federal law to have all the emissions equipment installed and working properly. There are local laws in some places that require the vehicles pass other, more stringent requirements.
For the record, I have no muffler and a single 2 1/2" pipe that exits in front of the passenger tire. It's a lot louder than the dual cat back system I had before, but performance wise I see no change.
when i took my cats off i did the same as Hausladen...cut out the back bigger two and left the front two alone....im sure it does make the check engine light come on but mine were already on...im not too worried about it.....i knew i'd have to put them back on for inspection, so i just clamped those pipes on and left enough room to weld the cats back on inspection time. it does get a little loud around 70 mph, but nothing that a good stereo system cant hide
Well I wasnt gonna get TRUE straight pipes, just no muffler. But I found out my county is part of some smog thing. I'm looking at the Flowmaster 40 Series, the High Performance Street series, not the Delta Flow one, any experinece with these?
what I have heared, by removing the cats in your truck or car you can burn a valve.
Without the back pressure from the cats and the recirculating gasses back into the engine..the engineers at Ford make it difficult in todays trucks to remove the cats, without burnng an aluminum valve.
