I have a 1980 1/2 ton. The 300 ci 6 cyl has converted itself to a 250 ci 5 cyl. What year and size trucks have engines that I can use to replace mine? I have a rebuilt head so I really only need a long block. Thanks
I have heard that some fuelie (EFI) late blocks did not have an opening for the fuel pump. I think they would be relatively rare and likely more expensive anyhow. But, just an FYI, might want to look at that. 1965 to 1996 were the years, EFI from 87 to 96 I think.
The 240 block is the same, but do not get tempted, no matter what the deal is. 300 is a better engine for a truck. And you cannot use the 300 head on a 240 block -- compression would be crap.
All EFI 300-6's have the fuel pump hole blocked off. Actually, it's just not drilled or machined, the pad is still there, but the lobe isn't there on the cam either. Any 300-6 from 65-86 will bolt right in. There were some differences, though, mostly with the dipstick. On your truck, I believe the stick goes into the pan, so that solves all those. If you get an older block, where the stick goes in behind the left motor mount, you can just put a vacuum cap over the tube that's left, or pull it out and put a small plug in there. Good luck, and have a fun swap.
Actually, the holes are drilled and tapped (maybe not the right ones though) as the coil is mounted there (at least on the 88 and 89's). I was thinking there was a block off plate there, but I just checked, and it's the coil mounting bracket
