I have a 5.4L engine in a 98 4wd f150.
What is the best crate engine to buy...I dont know anything about this...if I could get some info that would be awesome. Is there a limit to the HP my truck can physically handle (within reason)? Also what would that do to my gas mileage?
Just curious, what's wrong with your current motor? I will venture to say that if you funds aren't an issue, you can probably drop what motor you want in it. What are your plans for the truck? Keep in mind that changing engine families will cause a need for frame mounts and tranny changes (maybe). You can surely count on your mileage going down, if you get bigger displacement, it's harder to keep your foot out of it
My engine is in tip top shape, I am just trying to learn a few things..I am definitly not considering it. I was just curious as to what it involved...it may be possible in the future if I wanted to totally redo a truck.
About the supercharger...what is the diff in that and a turbocharger? Do I have to get a new hood for that addition.
Thanks Guys, for the help!
Turbochargers use exhaust gases to run a compressor to force more air into your engine. Superchargers use your engine's power (a belt from your crankshaft to the compressor) to do the same thing. The difference is mostly about *when* they apply the extra boost to the intake.
In your case a engine swap probably isn't really what you need, but you could learn plenty about possible engines and what mods they require .
I'd say if your motor is running fine, leave it be. But if you ever do put a crate engine in it, I suggest using a Jasper engine. They r remanufactured ford blocks, but the vital parts such as cranks, cams bearings, lifters and the like r made within tighter tolerences. Jasper also takes it upon themselves to work out any bugs in the motor that Ford forgot about. If you order a Jasper they also have a great warranty. You can also order performnace, or even custom models. They directly replace your factory motor, no modifications required.
Oh yeah...I almost forgot the most important part...price!
They're reasonable. I paid $2,900 for my 4.6 L romeo. You would probobly look at $3,800 for a performace 5.4 L (that's including shipping)
