How can you tell the difference?
I have an '02 F-350 with a 7.3 and a 4r100 with under 31k. I had the dealership flush the trans last year and this year. Last year they used mercron 2 this year they wrote on the slip they used mercron 5.
I brought it to their attention that they used the wrong fluid. They are saying that their tech punched in the wrong code. BS. How can I tell what fluid they used? I almost forgot - the truck now has a humming noise
I'd think you'd want to use the fully synthetic Mercon 5. I'm not too sure, but the 4R70W has used Mercon 5 for at least the last five years it was put in a truck 1999-2004. I'd figure the 4R100 would have the same fluid.... it is backwards compatible and probably loosened up a stuck part from the older Mercon. As far as telling them apart... don't have any idea there.
Oh yeah, it is quite a bit more expensive for the Mercon 5....
If you take a sampleof the fluid and send it to an oil analyis place, they MIGHT be able to tell which fluid is in there.
If in doubt, change the fluid. Use MERCON, and not MERCON V. It will be much cheaper to change the fluid now than it will be to change the transmission later.
Kspilkinton, Is Mercon 5 defenetly full synthetic? My last two 4x4's with off road and towing packages say on the dipstick to use Mercon 5. I do know the differentials have a tag stating full synthetic. TIA SC
Mercon V is not fully synthetic. It is a "blend". There is no way to tell them apart from oil analysis because the properties are only slightly different. Only Dexron fluids are totally backward compatible for GM transmissions back to 1949. Ford, DC and most imports are not.
Full synth, semi-synth....One way or another, the Motorcraft Mercon V is way more expensive, they wouldn't just throw it in....
It is not backward compatible per TSB 01-15-7... I apologize for the mistake.
Safest bet... remove the current fluid and filter, flush and replace filter and fluid with the appropriate items.
The axles on newer F150's and expy's are filled with synthetic gear lube. There are manufacturers beside Ford with fully synthetic versions of Mercon V... really expensive.
