yet another dumb trans question

ok i am semi-soon going to be looking at doing a trans filter and fluid change on my 1990 f250, its got the E4OD trans, i have read that there is a drain plug on the torque convertor also to drain that fluid too, is this true? (i have not yet gotten to crawl under that far and inspect everything yet or not) if so how much fluid will it take for a complete refill, and what way should it be rifilled (i.e. dump 5 quarts in, run through gears then add 4 more.. etc. etc.)

also a big question i have, is there a difference from dexron 3 mercron and type f truthfully?? if so what, and what kind would everyone recommend and where have you found best prices at.

i know the transfer case takes ATF in it also ( i actually woulda thought it woulda been gear oil, but whatever ) and was gonna drain it out and refill at the same time. can it use the same trans fluid as the tranny itself, and what is its capacity??

sorry for the long post, but i wanna have everything i need and not have to make a hundred trips to the parts store. thanks in advance

yes there is a drain in the torque converter, and transfer case uses the same type of fluid. prices are going to depend on where you go don't know anything about pa. would recommend buying in 1-gallon jugs or 5-gallon bucket to save some money. amounts will depend on what make and model of transfer case you have.

ok so quick question, what type of trans fluid does the E4OD take exactly, i dont have a owners manual for the truck, the dipstick doesnt say anything, and the Haynes manual tells every other type of trans BUT the E4OD, go figure lol.... to quote the manual it says c4, c6, and aod 1980 dexron II, 1981 on is MERCON, and c5 is type H, but no mention of the E4OD (also never heard of type H) im getting mixed results searching the internet, some says type F, and others Mercon V (5).. i figure somebody here has to know the correct answer

I have always used DexIII/Mercon in all my 90's vintage E4OD equipped trucks with no problems. No fancy synthetics ($$$), just plain ol' Dex/Mercon. All 15+ quarts.....

Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles Read here before you start.
As for fluid, if I had an E4OD, I would use MercronV. You will probably need 16qts of whatever fluid you choose for the trans and around another 4qts for the case.
When doing the transfer case make sure you take the fill bung out first. That way if you can`t get it out the transfer case will still have fluid in it.

The Dexron/Mercon vs. Mercon V debate has raged on for years. I'll stick with the Dex/Merc in my stock E4ODs. Anytime I have had a transmission rebuilt I use whatever the builder recommends. I have never had an issue following this philosophy. Your results may vary.
