I have a 1998 Ford Expedition and the hood release is stuck. My truck stays outside and we really don’t drive it that much. So when I went out this weekend to take it to the hardware store it wouldn’t start. The battery seemed to be dead. So I proceeded to pop the hood to jump it and found that the hood wouldn’t open. Anyone know what the problem could be? Any diagrams of the hood release mechanism? Is this a common problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated as my truck is dead in the water as it stands.
Get someone to help you. While they pull the hood release tap the front edge of the hood with the palm of your hand. If the cable is not actually broken this should do the trick. If the cable is broken you could try to get to the hood latch from underneath, but it would be pretty tough. Good luck.
I bet the latch assembly is siezed up. To get the hood open, hold the release, and have someone pull up on the hood. AFter you get it open, try lubing it up, and if that doesn't work, replace the latch.
I have tried to pry it up but was afraid that I would damage the front grill. I had someone pull the release inside the cabin while I did this but no luck. I strayed some wd40 on the parts to try to loosen them up. I did get access from under that truck but couldn’t see real well how the thing worked. So I was thinking about removing the front grill from underneath and try to work on it from there.
