61-66 glass (windshield)

Just wondering if there are any tricks to getting a windshield out without breaking it. I am doing a 65 and my windshield is really bad. I have a '63 for parts and the windshield in it is near perfect. has only a small crack on bottom passenger side from the dash to the side at an angle about 6 inches long. no other chips or cracks. I am wondering if it would be possible to remove the window from the 63 without breaking it and get it into the 65 without breaking it. I am on a really tight budget for the next while so a brand new windshield is not really an option. any advise is really appreciated.

Does the crack on the 63 go all the way to an edge? If so, I don't think you'll be able to take it out in one piece.

I used a filet knife when I removed the windshield. Worked pretty well

A broom handle cut in to 6" long 2 of them, & a guitar string fine wire one, feed it through the windshield seal wrap string around handle's you need 2 -3 people, 3 is best. Pulling it like a saw back & fourth all the way around it you will need to replace the seal do it in a warm day not hot day . Should work.

Just suggestion, may want to try and stabilize the crack before removing the windshield. Not sure what glass repair kit cost, but may prevent the crack from spreading.

Unless the old seal is almost new, as in less than 6 months old, you WILL NOT be able to salvage it. They are about $40 I think. And the windshield is about $150. Even if the seal is new, you may still not be able to salvage it. Especially if you are babying the glass becuase its got a crack.

Personally, I would not recomend putting a used windshield in, unless it is perfect. Old windshields almost always have fine scratches from wiper travel, and the safety glass is older and more brittle. If you have even a small crack already, you'll probably have a worse one in 6 months. The new OEM stuff is good quality I believe. My new one had the mildly tinted top edge too, which is nice from a comfort standpoint.

Just my opinions.

later......

You can probably get the old w/s out without breaking it if you are willing to sacrifice the gasket. Take a box knife and cut the gasket lips off all the way around then lift out the w/s. That old gasket is probably hard and brittle anyway. I'd look real close at the w/s, too, as I agree with cdherman in that it probably is sand pitted or scratched. The crack that is already in it could travel in a new direction when you start trying to get the w/s out or during installation. Any time you are working with an old w/s that has been out in the sun, you run a huge risk of breaking it. There is a lot of stress introduced into the glass during this process. I do autoglass for a living (15 yrs. experience) and I won't do this type job. Too much risk for me and too many variables.

Save your money and buy a new gasket and glass. You will break that old glass.
