Tailgate Latch Disassembly

I'm tryin' to do a seriously good job on prepping my 65 F250 for paint, and I'd like to get the tailgate latch mechanism outa the tailgate. There's 2 pieces at the upper corners where the tapered tongue looking thing pokes out that have 2 bolts each. I thought removal of the bolts would get them off but they're still connected internally by a spring somehow. Pop right back everytime.

Internal springs I can't see always get me nervous, lol, so I haven't undone the bolts on the latch handle itself yet.

Anybody ever been there and done that?

Sounds like the rods to the handle are still attached. Take the handle assm. off and you should be able to get at the little clips that hold them on. Good luck, Phil

Thanx for the response Phil. I plucked my courage up and did just that. Easy money. 2 little clips and it was all mine.

I was surprised to find there were absolutely no signs of ever having any lubrication in there. Dry as a bone. I reassembled it with some axle grease at key locations and now I can open the latch with my little finger! Cool.

Thanx again.
