Thermostat

Hey guys,

I changed my thermostat yesterday along with my top and bottom hose, now I see an small sizzle bubble leak around where the bolts go through the thermostat housing. It looks like water is making its way up my thermostat bolt holes? Is this possible? Should I put some bolt lock sealer on the bolts prior to installing them? The bolts are tight as they would go so I know thats not the issue. Thanks

It's pretty easy to get the thermostat "cocked" a little when installing. If you tighten the bolts when it is like that, you will probably break the housing. I would pull it off and check it again. Ranger Bob is right about the anti-sieze. Don't glue them in. You might need to take it out someday!.

Don't put any thread lock on the bolts!

Is there a gasket for the T-Stat housing? If not, you might try making your own with some Permatex "Water Pump & Thermostat Housing" RTV Silcone which is made for that particular purpose. It works very well. Clean both surfaces real good with solvent and a fine wire brush before applying a thin, even coat of the RTV. Make sure it gets entirely around the bolt holes.

Overtightening, or uneven tightening, of the bolts can warp the housing and cause leaks. You should get a torque wrench and torque bthe bolts to 120 in-lbs.
