Impact wrench question

What determines the torque that an impact wrench has? They basically all look the same so there has to be somethig internal in the design that determines torque. The reason that I'm asking is I just got a Chicago Pneumatic that is rated at 360 ft-lbs max torque. When I use it, it doesn't seem to be much different from the 250 ft-lb campbell hasufeld wrench that I have. I'm assuming that the higher rated wrench should spin off lug nuts faster?? Is that correct?

Thanks.

Spin rpm can vary and does not have anything to do with the torque a tool develops. The internal design dictates torque. Ratings can "vary" from one manufacturer to another, -if you know what I mean...

The air pressure you use has the most direct effect on torque. Some guns are just made better/more efficient internally.

Yep, I hear you. I just thought it funny that the 'cheap' brand seemed to break the lug nuts lose just as quickly as the 'good' brand...

Where it doesnt need its max power this may be true,,, but that cheapie wont last like the CP though. I train my men to oil the bolts first and remove/install these nuts slowly too,, speed kills and makes for heat, tends to sieze the nuts.
