I need a good impact wrench. Ihave to install some Budd wheels and need an impact capable of 225 ft/lbs torque.
I already have a Wal-mart special that is good for about 100 lbs, but I need a better qualityone. I am always getting out the old 4-way to remove my car tires that someone has put on with an impact. Can anyone recommend an impact that is relatively cheap , but is good? I also need a socket that is 3/16 square for the Budd wheels. Any suggestions, Thanks
Craftsman has some nice 1/2" impacts in the $100-$200 range. My uncle has one I think is about 10 years old, and it hammers away on tractors real well. If I had the cash, I'd go for somthing Ingersol Rand but then you are lookin at $300 and up range.
Mine is a Coleman "Powermate" that I've used for six years as a DYI. It is 1/2 inch that's rated as 400 ft lbs max torque and cost $63.00 at list price (which I paid) . It works great on my F-250 wheels and removing some other small tractor bolts. Cheers!!!
I got a 69 piece set made by Devilblis (sp?) at Sams Club. It has an impact wrench, socket wrench, hammer, and grinder (all air of course). The impact wrench I think is rated near the upper 200's I believe (~275 maybe). All in all a very nice set. IMHO definately worth the $70 that I paid. Plus it all comes in a nice hard shell carrying case.
Thanks for the replies. I have had very bad luck with the new Craftsman tools, my old Craftsmen are good, the the new ones have been bad. I have been considering an I-R impact. I wonder if they offer any reman. units? Does anyone know of any good web sites for tools? I live so far away from any citys, that it is sometimes better for me to order off the internet.
I've got an ingersoll-rand, 1/2 impact rated at 450lbs tightening and 525lbs loosening, it was expensive but it is good for anything you want to do on a light truck, another variable you will want to look at is how much air the impact gun uses versus what your compressor can put out.
I recently bought this 12 volt powered impact gun from harbor freight for 25 bucks. I didn't think it would work at all, but to my surprise it works great. I got a flat 2 weeks ago in the Arizona desert on a dirt road and had to take off 8 lugs and jack up my truck in 116 degree heat. Boy how I wish I had that thing then. I also bought a 6 ton bottle jack because it took about a thousand turns to raise the stock scissor jack. I was so tired and hot I just drove off the jack and picked it up off the ground.
I didnt think one of them 12volt deals would work that good
i got one from craftsman air impact it was 145.00 and its great ..and i have a 150 gal ,,220volt twin lung compresser in my shop so air supply is very good and that helps things along...
I've been having a lot of fun around the shop with the IR 2141 from Ingersol-Rand.
Rated at 1100ft.lbs. fwd and 1200 in reverse.
I can really break some stuff with this sucker.
Lucky for me there's plenty of 3/4" sockets around the garage.
If I can just find one with the same power in a 1/2", I'll be one happy boy.. Of course, I'll have to replace every single fastener I touch, but I'll be laughing all the way.
But, for now, the 2131 works OK, still got more power than most guns you can buy, and it's nice to be able to change the power settings with the big dial on the back.
They kick like a mule, though.
I just purchased an I-R 231C. So far I am real happy with it. It don't have 1000 lbs. torque, but compared to my pitiful old impact wrench, it has plenty of power. Now I need a bigger torque wrench so I can tell what to set the dial at!

Here's how you get more power out of your 1/2":
I assume you are using the 1/4" air fittings, correct?
Convert to 3/8" air fittings and hose for the impact only. Make sure there is NO reduction, so you may have to swap out the screen in the handle to take the larger 3/8" air fitting.

It's my understanding that one shouldn't use an impact tool to torque set anything. But rather one should use the Torque wrench itself. May our Moderator Torque 1st can elaborate on that.....or whoever????
