Has anyone added a steering stabilizer to an Expedition? I see they sell them for the 2001 Expedition, but I don't have a stock steering stabilizer. If someone has added one, did it help? Was it hard? What else needed changing besides the stabilzer?
Steering stabs are to minimize jerks in the steering wheel (unfortunately doesn't eliminate jerks behind the wheel :-) ) caused by over sized tires causing bump steer, or by hitting rocks or sudden deep holes when off road (or some northern streets).
With the 17" wheels on my Expy I've never felt the need for one.
I can't see at all where a steeering stab would help in a towing situation on normal roads. I tow off the pavement and off the road frequently and have never had a steering jerk problem due to being observant for obstacles, and reasonable speed for the conditoins.
I have steering stabilizers on both the Bronco and the Pathfinder. As mentioned above the stab helps when you hit a hole or a bump. The expy has never had wheel jerk that would make me want to add one. It wouldn't help a bit with towing.
I've got one on my '00 4x4 and think it's the best $50 ever spent. I do have 33" tires (+3" over stock), however, it helped steering feel tremendously even without the larger tires.
