I have a 2002 Escape XLT I love it but I am noticing an increase in noise coming from the front end. Any body know possilble causes?
It is very loud at aroud 25-30 mph. Please help
The most common problem with Escapes are tie rod ends. Going over something like a speed bump at a slower speed, you'll hear a noise in the front-end. I believe the parts are around $40 and can be replaced yourself.
Another problem (not as common) is the rack. Many times the noise sounds like its coming from the dash or steering. Not a do-it-yourself fix. The rack replacement will also require a front-end alignment afterwards.
With mine, it doesnt come when you hit a speed bump, it is just while driving in flat land at about 15-30 mph and while braking. I read some online reviews that complained about alot of tire and road noise, maybe thats all that it is. any ideas??? (could that still be the tie rod ends?)
thanks
In general, alot of people have complained about the road noise from the factory tires. My original Americana SUV tires were terrible. I've replaced them with some decent tires and have removed most of the road noise. The Escape has no insulation and thin sheet metal so some tire noise will exist.
A clunking noise and the sound of metal on metal contact isn't road noise. Tie rod noise usually occurs when you go over a bump (suspension goes up and down) or your corner.
Our 02 Tribute has a horrible noise. It didn't matter when we changed tires. It will be going into the shop shortly. My guess is worn wheel bearings or CV joints.

Post the cause when you get it fixed. I've heard of a few people with worn bearings but no CV joint problems. Seems odd since I've rarely had problems with wheel bearings but CV joints tend to have problems.
Got her fixed. Turned out to be a front bearing. Got a brake job too. Front rotors were shot at 35K. Still had a little pad left. Wife complained loud enough and got the rotors covered under warranty.
