Weiand intake manifold

Just for grins I was wondering if anyone runs or ever has ran the single-plane high rise aluminum intake that you may have seen in Summit or Jegs. I know that they are single plane but the RPM-band on them says idle to 6000 RPM. I don't plan on running one really but just wondering. I was also thinking that the more experienced guys should put a thread together of any and all intakes for FE's and maybe put them in order of best performance to the not so good ones (Just a thought).

Intake manifols (like camshaft's) are usually specific to application. Generally speaking for good performance without sacrificing torque and HP the most widely used intake would be the Edelbrock Performer. Keeping price in mind.

I know what you mean (not to be a smart alec) but I was just wondering if it maybe had smaller runners to keep velocity up like the old Edelbrock Streetmaster (single plane).

Oh, I see you live in the same state as I do! Whereabouts do you call home? I'm in college right now at Miles City but live in Roberts (close to Red Lodge) in the summer.

Another god intake mainfold is the Blue Thunder but it rather pricey. By the way I live in Polson Mt. Not to many FE fans around here. Mostly big block chvy's and Mopower's.

It is the general concensus by most FE gurus that the weiand intake is horrible. The single plane design cuts down a little on low end and the low rise/small runner configuration doesn't leave much on top. I have never run one but if I had to guess I would say the RPM manifold would beat it at any RPM in any build.

Its nice to see you back around 67 428 Fairlane Ranchero!

Did Offenhauser ever make intakes for the FE? If so were they any good? Isn't the Performer RPM based on the design of a factory ford intake that they made in aluminum and cast iron, I have the Performer RPM on my 401 but I was just bored and curious on these other intakes.

I heard they made 2 different ones back in the day and that one was called a "Dual Port" and the other was "Dual Plain" and one or the other was a dog...

Ford never made an intake like the RPM. Fords runners were tapered and the RPMs aren't. The rpm is edelbrocks own deal. Interesting enough the blue thunder (which is supposed to be 20HP better than the rpm) has tapered runners.

manifold design

RS is right, the Blue Thunder manifold is thought, from drag strip back-to-back testing, to have about 20 hp more than the Edel RPM. As to why Mr Francis makes them that way....cause thats what works ! If you look at the BT intakes, and the Ford sidewinder and police interceptor and 428CJ manifolds, they all have similar tapered runners. This seems to be what the FE likes. There was a time, long ago, when Edelbrock made better stuff than they have now. The current performer is just a recycled SP-2P design, it is not worth using, even if you get it for free. The RPM is kinda okay, but not as good as Blue Thunder. Edel used to make a nice tapered runner manifold called 'F-427' which was excellent. Sometimes you can find one used. But the Blue Thunder is available new, right now, and is the best. Why not get one ? DF
