Dual Plane or Single Plane ?

While I'm currently dinking around with the Carter YF, I'm saving to get the Offenhauser 4V intake manifold. I'm toying with the idea of using a Carter 450AFB Or an Edelbrock 500 4V (although I'm not opposed to using the Motocraft 2V).

My ride is a daily driver F100. My ultimate plans are to replace the BorgWarner 3-spd with an NP435, coupled with a 2.70 rear end. I'm heading off to the wrecking yard today to find a set of EFI exhaust manifolds. I'll put a big Flowmaster behind them (since we have no smog police in Mississippi, the cat is going to mysteriously *disappear*). Tires will be stock LT235's.

My question is this: Should I get a dual plane or single plane manifold ? My gut feeling is to get a single plane, but I'd like to hear the pros/cons from those who have actually used them.

Many thanks !

Dual Plane or Single Plane ?

If you insist on a 4BBL (), then go with the dual plane. If you use the 2BBL, go with a single plane. I have the Offey C-series single plane on my truck, along with a Holley 350 2BBL. The Holley is easier to calibrate, and much more reliable than an old Motorcraft, plus it's only $200. You can get the intake from JCWhitney, for about the same. For a throttle bracket, I used a stock 300-6 throttle cable and bracket, clamped to the intake. I used a 6" c-clamp, and used Loctite to keep it tight. I have had absolutely 0 problems with this, and it's been on there for over a year. In using this setup, though, use red RTV on both sides of the gasket. You will be very glad you did later.

Dual Plane or Single Plane ?

Depends on what you want. If you're looking to build the truvck up to make it more powerful and a lot quicker go with the single plane. If you want a bit better towing capability than stock with some extra power in reserve when the secondaries kick in go with the dual plane. The further your engine is from dead stock the less useful the dual plane becomes.

Do not use a dual plane with a 2V carb, they're designed specifically for small 4Vs.

Dual Plane or Single Plane ?

There is a difference between a dual port and a dual plane manifold. The Offy manifolds I have seen are a dual port design. The only way that I know to get a dual plane is by dividing the Clifford manifold front/back in the plenum under the carb with a fabricated plate. This feeds the three front cylinders from one side of a carb and the back three from the other. This gives the best low end throttle response and torque which is what the 300 does best. Dual plane is a misnomer for this manifold configuration which carries over from the dual plane V8 concept.

Good choice on the EFI manifolds. You can use the stock exhaust "Y" pipe after the front converter material falls out of it... Then build your own exhaust system from after the first converter. I have found that a regular Walker glass pack feeding into a nice high flow baffled muffler gives a nice tone without any harshness. Either one alone does not sound good... -Too much "Buzz".

K&N makes a cast aluminum 5-1/8" carb to 4"ID tube adaptor #85-1060 that will fit on top of the carb that has adequate flow characteristics for a low revving small block V8 which would be great for a 300.

Thanks for using FTE!
